Doesn't epilog have some diagnostic functiond to fire the laser without any computer? If so put a piece of wood infront of the laser and fire a short pulse and see if it works.

One important thing is, what will happen if the machine break down? If you can live with the machine standing still for 1-2 weeks and you have some technical skills the chinese laser will work fine....
