Brian,
Have you considered attaching (glue, tape) a longer board to the back of the one you are turning. After turning the flat top and the bowl inside, reverse the long board and do the back.
Neil,
The outboard tool rest works well- even for very large pieces. I have the 3520A and there wasn't a choice back then. Main drawback - you have to have room to store it, and it's very heavy.

I plan to attend with my wife, Sandy.
The AAW Website lists Tri-State Woodturners as a chapter in Chattanooga. Their website is: http://www.tristatewoodturners.org

After about five years, I just bought my second 5-gal pail of Anchorseal. I tried wax and paint, but only the A-seal seems to work on a variety of wood (All logs I cut myself.) Some wood, especially...
[QUOTE=Steve Schlumpf;1412777]Patrick - I have both of the Monster systems (love them!) but, in my opinion, were not designed to go that deep.
Patrick, I agree with Steve about the Monster...
Steve,
The leaf vase is cherry. The design was copied from an American Woodturner magazine article. I just wanted to see if I could do it. I've made several bowls similar in shape to the flower...
I'm getting ready for an art show in a couple of months and am trying different styles of turning/carving. I think I got a bit carried away and made "carvings that were turned" rather than "turnings...
Thanks for the kind words.
The bottom and a "cone" around the top are turned on the main axis, just like any HF.
For a 6-7 in. vessel, you then move the drive center about 1/2 in. one...
This summer I went to the AAW Symposium in Albuquerque, where I picked up a Woodturning Design magazine. An article by Paul Stafford described how to turn a closed form bowl with an offset opening. I...
Three ways: 1. As you use the finish, add clean pebbles to the can to keep it full to the top (no air in the can that way).
2. Use the commercial gas suggested, or just use propane from your...
Mike,
Very good tutorials. Even someone from the turning forum can understand them!

Thanks to everyone for the nice words. It's been a while since the previous postings, but the auction finally took place and the "Dancing Bowl" brought $90.
Meanwhile, LOML and I (with some...
I use it more than anything except the parting tool. It allows you to do cuts that would otherwise take several different tools.

I finally pulled the plug and am fully retired. After a month of working on the "Honey Do" list, I had a break when LOML went off to play bridge. I quickly fired up the yellow monster and started...
Jim,
I saw David at a turning symposium in Nashville and he showed me a way to use his jig on the Woverine without the block. He extends the gouge out of the jig the length of the saddle in the...
Colin, I learned to turn on a Shopsmith and it shouldn't vibrate just turning it on with no load. On the other hand, it's very hard to make a log blank round enough to start turning with no...
Very nice! (Stopped by on my way to the Turner's Forum - I could make the base :)!)
And, if you sign in, the pictures suddenly appear!
There's a good article on finishes for food items in the latest AAW magazine. He suggests leaving cutting surfaces as is - you'll cut through any finish, anyway.
That said, I've tried mineral...
Thanks, Reed. Very generous. Count me in.
Thanks, Brodie! Count me in.
What happens to a reply when you close the browser by mistake? All those words must go somewhere. Is there a valley in Tibet that's filled with missing words?
Anyway, I took my camera but didn't...
For Christmas, LOML gave me a registration to the two-day Tennessee Association of Woodturners' Annual Symposium. Two days of David Ellsworth, Ernie Conover, Nick Cook and Andy Woodard turning and...
