If I am following the math of the chart, then for a given sweep you take the width of a gouge x the multiplier for that sweep and you get the radius of that gouge:
width * multiplier = radius

You may be right. I don't see a pattern yet. I just wrote to Pfeil, asking them if there is a pattern to sweeps. I hope that they answer me.

Thanks to all the people who posted responses. I'm still struggling to understand this.
I think that what Derek and Mike posted are different ways of saying the same thing. In either case, it...
But within the gouges of one manufacturer, Pfeil in this case, what is the relationship between the gouges that have the same sweep number? What is it that makes one gouge a #8 sweep and another a #9...
I'm not an experienced carver. I've got a question about how the sweep of gouges are related. I'm using Pfeil gouges. I thought that I understood that all #9 sweep gouges were different size portions...
Phil--
Thanks. I just went and checked. Mine is one of recalled chargers.

You might want to ask on the "Turner's Forum" about a bandsaw for bowl blanks.
I have a Delta 14" bandsaw. When I started turning I bought a riser for my bandsaw so I could cut bigger bowl...
I recently moved. Caulked joints were very difficult to undo.

Thanks for all the information. I was afraid it was made by someone (as opposed to by a factory). Your location makes sense as I'm located (as is the friend who lent me this tool) in...
A friend lent me a tool to turn a tenon to a specified size (a cylinder with the same diameter along its length). The tool has a rectangular shaft with a bend roughly an inch and a half from the tip....
If you drop a tool or work piece, a mat may keep it from damage. Comfortable shoes will only help a dropped piece if you manage to land it on your feet.

Try this website. They suggest several fonts that are very similar to yours (at least one free).

You could use box-slotting bits on a router table:

You use these bits on a router table with the box dry fit and clamped....

Thanks for all the suggestions. It is very reassuring to hear so many people tell me not to worry too much. I think I'll take the oldest half of the rough tuned bowls out of the bags, brush them off,...
After a recent wind storm I rough turned quite a few (60?) green bowls. They have been sitting for about a month (some a little longer and some a little less). After rough turning, I coated them with...
I make my own saucers of wood. Actually I start off making bowls, but through the magic of design transformation, some of my bowls end up as saucers. : ^ )

I have a Tormek and I like it for sharpening my turning tools. It is very consistent. I can use a blade, put it back in the jig, and sharpen it very quickly--taking off very little metal.
The...

Thanks for suggesting I look at the Vicmarc. They even mention that people use it with Jet lathes.
The more I look, the more confused I get.

Thanks for your response and for the picture. It gives me another perspective on how that tripod works. That looks like it shouldn't be much of a problem to brace the tripod.
I should...

You have several good points here. I have no desire for an unexpected meeting of my hands, body, or head with the gouge or a large piece of spinning wood. I think that the Powermatic free...

I hadn't seen Baxter's Tool Rest. Thanks for pointing it out. I unfortunately don't have a welding setup (nor skills). I'm still not sure what I want to do.

I saw that design when I searched the archives. It is ingenious. It does look very sturdy. It also looks like the easiest version to build myself. It is, however, not completely without cost....

When you said, "you must put something (block of wood) between the stand and the end of the lathe," did you mean attach a brace near the top of the stand? When I first read that I thought...
