I use a Minwax water based sealer on the first later, then either a very light wiping of the WOP, not trying for an even finish, or spray the piece with lacquer lightly when spinning. The dyes will...

Fred,
Thanks for the compliment! I come here to be inspired myself, and always nice to inspire others.
Also good explanation on Transtint. Couple other notes, make sure you seal the wood,...
This is a pecan bowl with transtint dyes, wop satin finish, and put through a buffing and waxing regiment.
This bowl was given out as part of a package deal when I sold Dark Side of the Moon to...
Ah yes, February 1980, went skiing for the first time ever, (actually I believe I went falling more that day) near Winterpark Colorado, snowed in that night at Berthoud Pass and couldn't make it back...
Purists sometime frown on end grain, although it can make design bands a lot easier to build if you use as usage technique.
Myself I have used both, side grain on field and edge grain on the...
Welcome to the segmented club! Nice form. Start to ask yourself now, could I go thinner on the piece? Also, look up Bowls from a Board, Malcolm Tibbets has some great books and ideas on this art...
4th Time was the charm! Received notice that I was honored this year with my first Blue Ribbon at the Texas State Fair, "Turned Wood, Any" category!
Here is the completed Dark Side of the Moon and taking it this weekend to the Texas State Fair for annual judging.
Completed base was was designed around an undercounter LED light and illuminates...
I have the Sorby, love it, and use it for all sorts of other things, most recently to grind down and polish the stained glass craters in my latest piece. I was never as good with a grinder though and...
Ahh lots of fond memories on that lathe, where I cut my teeth so to speak when we got it for my dad in the mid 70's. And at least it was still made in the US of A back then. I made all of the...
Paul, Thanks, I think....
Thanks for all the kind words!
Always trying to stretch both my skills, and boundaries of what has been done previously. The stained glass came from my dad's collection, and more material where...
So here it is, off the lathe, will complete the base for the light later. 652 pieces of Bubinga, Purpleheart, Ebony, colored veneers, a Cherry "Dark Side of the Moon" on the interior, with 32 stained...

If you plan on doing segmented work, I use Cole Jaws a lot for leveling one side of the layer if it is thick enough.
If it is too thin (less than the bumpers) or too thick...
If I am able to turn even one, pardon the pun, over to the dark side..., and motivate them to turn, then the post is worth it.
Finally figured red out these quote things also! Learn something...
Thanks!
"Incredible! My absolute favorite prior to Wish You Were Here being issued."
I think I will stay away from the burning man album cover though, a bit tougher than this one I imagine....

So haven't posted for a while, but been busy with other interests, light paintings, etc... however, have been working on this piece off and on for over a year and a half, and it is finally nearing...
I got an 18" Sears on sale for around $90 with two chains and works fine for around the house and not a lot of trees in yard (I live in the city), and for the few pieces of hard pecan I have used it...
Transtint dyes on both, denatured alcohol base, lacquer finish on Marvin, General Coatings Salad Bowl finish on bowl. If interested in transtint process look up some of my previous posts where I go...
Very nice form and flow, well done!
If you happen to be going to the fair, Marvin the Martian and the Aurora bowl pictured here will be on display at the Creative Arts Building at the Texas State Fair after both receiving "Yellow...
Very nice work! Best of luck at the show!
Two years and no noise, compared to my old Craftsman don't even realize it is on sometimes it is so quiet.
Finished up the other State Fair of Texas Entry and dropped off for judging today. Don't know how many have tried to turn Douglas Fir, but extremely difficult, it is very soft between hard growth...
