Wow this one was dredged up from the deep! Almost 2 years old. Since I was the op, I thought I'd chime in. I bought the LN scrapers and a Hock burnishing rod. I recommend both. The burnishing rod...
There are a couple of Blacksmiths (Phil Kootnz & Jake Pogrebinsky) in Galena, Alaska making nice holdfasts. Chris Schwarz pictures them in his workbench book, and praises them on his blog. I...
Peter, The arm is steel, but the block (connects arm to tension mechanism) that broke in definitely cast iron. Checkout the pic I posted.
I think I'll cut that 3/4" blade up and make a nice...
Well, I called CS. They agreed to send the replacement parts, no questions asked. Of course my saw will be down for a week. I asked them to use UPS next day service, they refused. I asked for...
Ray,
That has been a problem with that saw for quite some time. It has to do with the pins being misaligned. Do a google search, you'll find a-lot of folks talking about that problem. I spoke...
I don't understand why a critical part under so much stress would be made out of cast iron!! Well actually, I do, it all comes down to profits:mad: That part should be steel.
I haven't called...
Hi Folks,
I bought a new Powermatic 14" BS last December. I doubt I even have 2 hours total time on and now its out of commission until I get parts.
Last Weekend I lifted the Carter tension...
Ray, we got 20" on Saturday:mad: Just when I thought spring was here. Its been in the 40's the last two days so its melting fast. The geese are back and the tulips were up about 2", so even the...
A friction fit is fine, but the first time I picked up a chisel by the handle and my freshly honed edge hit the floor, I broke out the epoxy! Just a dab as insurance. If you need to remove the...
Steve has sold the business. He is still sharpening saws, but is no longer available at that address or phone number. His e-mail address is SharpeningGuy01 AT aol.com I have a cell phone number...
Nice project and great thread Robert. Keep the pictures coming.

Jim,
I cut the paper a bit wider than the widest chisel or plan iron I plan to sharpen.
I use all 3 pieces on the same piece of glass.
I do sometimes look at the edge with a cheap jewelers...
Hi Mathew,
Glad to see that you joined. Welcome to the creek. We have not talked much about vises. My first question is why have you ruled out a tail vise? If you don't want a tail vise, you...
The folded lateral lever suggests its a Sargent.

Pat,
There are a few catalog sketches on the Disstonian Institute. Says 77's were sharpened at 8ppi except for 1 1/4" at the toe filed at 12ppi.
Nice score, show us some pictures when you get...
Looks like someone has a backsaw problem!! Very nice Gary I don't think it will take you too long to fill it.;)
Jonathan
Jeff,
I was going to send you a PM, but it looks like you have not enabled that feature, so check your e-mail.

You could lap the sole using sandpaper on a flat surface if you want, but unless the sole is a disaster a few scratches wont affect its use. Having said that, I would pass on this plane and save up...
Jeff,
Welcome to the creek. Nice to see another Alaskan on here. If you get over to Anch, give me a shout, maybe I can give you a few pointers.

Some folks, myself included have mentioned having difficulties with the MKII with very narrow chisels. There is not much surface area and they tend to skew. I have heard some folks mention that the...
That is quite a nice collection of saws Harry. Did you make them all?
Jonathan
Thomas,
If you don't want to go the e-bay route, check out the classifieds here on the creek. For reputable dealers try these guys. I have bought from all 3 of them.

Hi Joel,
First off, I don't think only one of my vintage saws is perfectly straight. most seem to have a bit of a wave in them. I think an actual kink or sharp bend, would cause problems. I'm...
Nice Haul Marcus. Nothing like a little quality time rust hunting with wife.
Is your Bishop from Cincinnati, Oh or Lawrenceburg, Ind? If I remember correctly, they moved from OH in IND in 1901. ...
