that is a REALLY gorgeous platter Alex! STUNNING!!! That would make a good serving platter, but I'd hang it on a wall.
I'm guessing that you are using 25mm jaws which in my opinion are too small to hold a vessel that big for hollowing......you could try a steady rest, or go up to 100mm jaws, or better yet I use Nova...
I agree with the wood stabilizer on the second piece and if you can get a tenon on it then fill the tenon with epoxy and then I wouldn't fill any of those pores, that would be too cool of a looking...
I was aware of the high price of the banjo and tool rest, but didn't even condsider the speed or HP problem. I guess I'm just going to have to save up for that Robust or Stubby.......
I think what you're refering to as looking like a rasp bounced off of it you're referring to the end grain areas, which require a good finishing cut, because those rough spots are virtually...
yeah, D.E. told me that he wouldn''t grind at 50 degrees because of the lack of versatilty at the bottom of deep bowls.......Now alot of The Masters like ellsworth grind their gouges a certain way...
If I drilled my own holes would the oneway 1642 24" outboard turning bed work on my Jet 1442 to make it more of a bowl turning lathe?
Seriously, that is a BIG apple tree. congrats.
You can also experiment and if you have a tendency to use a bowl gouge a certain way it is possible for you to find a grind that perfectly matches that. I use an offeset clewes/ellsworth type grind,...
When my old skewchigouge "crossed the point" I ground a "spunion" or vortex tool.....I ground the top, but had never touched or really seen her grind, I just put a roundedbevel on the bottom and it...
No you weren't being a girly man I should probably put on the old timberlands when I work, but I took up pyrography and carving so most of my work is sitting down, because of some cracked disks and a...
yeah, I didn't know dogwood was even a tree, I thought it was just a regular flower, like a begonia........I have a 1930's weller dogwood vase and always assumed it was just a flower. These 3 words...
shoot, even if I had one I would only be able to see that matt 1 hour a week.......I must be a total slob!
great stand, but in my honest opinion it would best be suited for either a large round precious gemstone...........These turnings are HOT items at the larger gem shows like the yearly tuscon show,...
a nice sturdy pair of flip flops with the easy option to go barefoot if you loose something in your shavings.......If I cleaned shop more than once week I wouldn't have all of that shaving pading

Different crystals vary, but all are MUCH harder than wood, so you might want to use those cylander round sanders and put it in your jacobs chuck, drill press, or drill, those cylander rubber sanding...
Sone people just leave the cracks.....but it's only really acceptible if it's burl.
This is how I deal with cracks, I buy some colorful gemstones like malochite or turquiose put them inbetween a...
yeah, our mudroom in Steamboat springs was where boots, snowboards, flyrod, and any additional water of any form was left before entering the rest of the house, I guess its a snow thing?
I like...
mudroom???? wow, I've only live in one house that had a "Mudroom" maybe it's more commen than I think or it's a Rocky Mtn. Way type of thing......I've got to check this program out, possibilites...
what your kids want, but I'd go to 36"deep to offset the height and not to make a 6 ft =72 in. long piece look akwardly skinny.......my grandparents who had kids of age in the 40' and 50's had about...
I was really just looking for an excuse to use the term "oh snap":p
but when I do see a hollowed form I automatically assume it's been cut thru endgrain......I did look back and the grain...
I just turned a rectangular piece of carob, about 18"x6"x5" on a jet 1442 with a bowl in the middle and the wings that curve down and actually upped the speed from 450........what are you doing that...
Nice work.....and sorry for your loss. Glad that you found a "new drug" in your new project. My drug has been around for a long time and with a green log spits trails of liquid in your face, IMO...
