I've been asked to engrave tempered glass (the type that shatters into a zillion tiny pieces if broken) for door panels.
I'm worried that the glass might shatter in the machine or (much worse) be...
If you ring the laser manufacturer or their agents they and explain what you are trying to do, they should be happy to send you a sample or even cut a piece to your own design.
(if they are not...
Also check that the head/lens assembly is all done up firmly!
The most widely available foam in the UK is Plastazote LD29 - works well up to 30mm thickness with a 60W laser.
Probably cheaper and easier to get hold of, but PVC is NOT fireproof!
Think about what would happen in a serious flareup and then decide which material you are most happy with.
I'd do that job with black/white Rowmark Laserlights material stuck onto clear acrylic.
The white layer in the Laserlights is so thin that the light will shine through easily.
Ross makes very good points.
When a new business customer asks me for a quote, I always ask for payment on delivery for a first order but state that subsequent orders *may* be allowed 30 day's...
Have a good think about venting before you get much further with the laser idea.
If you can vent unfiltered exhaust to the open air, then the cost is low - just a fan and some piping.
Be aware...
Do try not to just copy - something truly original is so much more satisfying!
I did stationery and favour boxes for both my daughters' weddings.
Fiona had the rose design and everyone loved it....
I downloaded a PDF converter to try. I thought it was a free one, but it turned out to be a 14 day trial for fairly expensive software.
Gave it a whirl, and it messed up the most recent problem AI...
Thanks!
Looks like I'm going to have to pay out - just to get the latest AI file import.
I've got this sneaky feeling the Corel and Adobe are mutually benefiting from this : change the way...
Every time I close down X6 I get a message with quite a good offer on the X8 upgrade.
I'm actually quite happy with X3 for general use, but use X6 for importing AI files etc - which has given some...
As John Lifer says, the centrifugal fan is likely be be the quieter - I would guess MUCH quieter!
I have a centrifugal fan (not the same model) and it makes a fairly strong whooshing sound, but it...
I did a similar job once on oak.
Just sprayed it all over with gold "Plastikote" paint (acrylic based paint in a rattle can) and then engraved it.
The lettering was too small to make masking a...

I'll set that up - it can't do any harm and might help prolong the life of the drive a bit more.
My Epilog is old enough that it came with a Coherent-Deos laser tube - a big relief!
I had to have it re-gassed back in May after 12 years service.
The guy who did the re-gassing said that he...
For those worried about the write limit on SSDs -
I've had my main machine for about 2 years now : the SSD dashboard reports 96% life remaining.
At about 2% loss per year, the drive is likely to...
The best thing about SSD is the startup time - between 10 and 20 seconds between turning the power on and being able to start work.
One thing to note - you must never de-frag an SSD. All it needs...
I'm running Corel X3 on my 32-bit W10 computer that I use to drive the laser, so X4 should be fine too.
I seem to remember having to download a patch from Corel to make it work properly, but it is...
Corel Photopaint is good, but almost all photo editing software will resample to a higher resolution. If you don't need the whole (expensive) Corel Graphics Suite, then something like Paintshop Pro...
Well, it was just paranoia, but having seen glass explode from heat stress, I wasn't going to take any chances!
I have vectored ordinary glass (by accident - hadn't noticed that there were hairlines in the customer's artwork).
It did work, but I threw away the glass IMMEDIATELY! Who knows what stresses the...

If it goes ahead, I'll get the customer to pay for an X8 upgrade!
I'm using Corel X6 and although it does lots of different barcode formats, it doesn't do QR.
Does anyone know if the latest version includes QR code generation?
