Thanks Barry. A canoe just might be next on the list. Something I could take my boys out in. That is unless they each want a kayak, then it's stitch and glue time!

Had a lot to get done this weekend, but managed to get a few more strips done and a couple of cheater strips. I will say that I took about 5min yesterday to take some sand paper and kind of "fair" a...
If it only peaks at 13 then you should be fine. That seems like a fair amount at 220v. I thought my grizzly was more like 7 amps at 220v.
Got another strip per side on last night. This second strip was much easier than the prior seeing as I already had a totally straight edge to lay it against.

As for the rolling bevel,...
The more the better. Have to admit, this made me chuckle out loud in my office.
Couple of quick pics. Internal bow stem.

Good fit after hand bevel.

$15 Kobalt block plane works great!

Another side note. I wound up buying one of the $15 adjustable mouth block planes from Lowes (Kobalt brand). I figured for $15 why not. Cleaned it up, lapped the sole (which was dead flat...
It's been a while since I posted. I'll try and get pics up soon. I have made small but significant progress. I now have the internal bow and stern stems shaped and in place. I used a really dry...
I have used them for a number of things around the house and on jigs. I also use them to hold pieces together that are also being glued. If I were going to use only screws without glue, I would...
That's a great video. Kinda makes me wish I was doing a canoe. The bends would be easier.
Made a little progress tonight. Got the stations screwed on to the risers and fit a test shear strip...
OK, update since I ran into some technical problems.
First, I found a lady on craigslist who actually had two 1x6x16' red cedar boards. Turned out her husband built a canoe and over ordered. I...
Thanks Ken. That did it. It was set to Hybrib. Interesteing part is, I have never had this issue until now. Also, I don't know how hybrid works, but I could not see any posts past 4/3.
The...
I started a thread in the boat building section about a month ago. Since that time, my paid membership ran out and now (when logged in) I can't see any of the recent posts. I can see them if I am...
Thanks for all of the responses guys.
I took a lot of time to think about bead and cove vs rolling bevel. From what a lot of folks say, the majority of the strips will need minimal beveling...
I'm starting on a strip built kayak. Hopefully I'll be getting the wood and cutting the strips this coming weekend. It won't be cedar (too expensive and far away). but probably poplar or white...
Quick question for anyone. It looks like cedar strips for this thing may be a no go. The lowest cost I can find is about $7 per board ft and they are not totally clear (1 knot per board but still)....
Little update from last night. I got the strongback in the garage, riser blocks screwed down and clamped the forms on just to see what it would look like. If you use your imagination, you can...
Little progress last night. My boys had a friend over which gave me a little extra shop time. I already had the saw horses done but thought I would post a pic anyway. Top rail is a bridle joint...
Made a little progress this weekend. I was hoping to get the forms done, but kids, house, dogs etc all come first. I would up copying the form templates so I could have a full sized cut out for...
I got my plans last night! They came in one of those long triangular boxes from USPS.
Now for some honest opinions although some might seemed nit picky. I would have preferred the plans come...
Because I am using a rolling bevel with my strips any suggestions on block planes? I have watch a few of Nick Schade's videos and he uses a rebate block plane for beveling the top of the strip...
It's funny you mentioned the table saw. I don't own one. I have a 17" grizzly band saw and the track saw in the pics. I have seen people who rip strips using a jig and regular circular saw. I'm...
After much research and contemplation, I decided to build A Spring Run kayak by Redifish Kayaks. All of their designs got very good reviews and seemed to strike a good balance between ability to...
Barry, that's a great looking canoe you have there. I'll admit that for a week I was thinking about building a strip canoe so I could take my boys on it. Then I thought about it and can just...
Isn't a thin kerf dado set defeating the purpose? It's like buying a bulldozer with a 1ft blade.
