As mentioned in my "what finish for purpleheart" thread, I made some pens for my brother and sister-in-law for Christmas. I'm pretty happy with the slimline pen/pencil set in redwood burl for my bro....
Thanks everyone. I will try some of these techniques...later. I had to get this one done, so I did a very light BLO coat and cured it will friction & heat, then my usual Crystalcoat friction polics...
I have a pen I'm finishing up for my sister and it is turned out of purpleheart. What is the best finish for this wood that will really bring out the purple color? Thanks!

I posted a question last week about pricing some wood offered locally. It was a couple of 2x2x24 Rosewood and Lacewood turning blanks, some Mahogany and a bunch of chunks of redwood burl.
Well...
A local guy has the following wood bits available with a "make offer" kind of deal. I have no idea what this is worth. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Mostlly- Red Wood Burl - slabs and and chunks...
Was going to make the title a little more suggestive, but decided this was a family forum. :D
So here's my current "wood stash" for turning. Question is, what should I do with it?

Very nice looking! But you got a 17" platter out of the UPPER part of this tree? Must have been a big one.
I have a hunk of Ash that I hope to turn into something pretty.

I haven't turned anything in a while because I have too many hobbies! I had a pen lathe that I "shared" with my father-in-law, but haven't had possession for a while. I recently bought a Jet...

First the pencil. No pen...

Well, I didnt' actually MAKE it this weekend, but I DID find the box it has been stored in for the last 4 years (since we moved). I made...

I'm new around here and pretty much a novice turner. I have a new Jet 1220VS (upgraded from my Griz mini used only for pens) and I'm looking forward...
Thanks, Mike! That is similar to what I saw them use, if not exactly the same. Lee Valley is one of their USA distributors and they sell for about $250 and up! Would we worth it if I every really...
This may be a dumb or naive question...I'm a novice turner (mostly pens and small stuff) and have never turned a bowl before.
On an TV show (I think an episode of "How It's Made"), I saw a wood...
I vote against covering up. If removing and rewiring isn't an option, can you just put a blank cover plate on the box and open the back of the cabinet for the blank cover? You'll hardly notice that...
Doesn't Walnut Oil get rancid like other nut oils?

I have a line on a used Griz 2hp 220V DC system locally for $150. This one: Griz G1029Z
Is $150 a good deal for "hardly used" (plus a 60-mile RT drive)? I think so, but wanted a second opinion. ...
