Thanks Mark - moulding will be installed on the edge of each shelf of a hifi rack!
Hi Guys,
I am planning putting some inlay (probably some sort of exotic hardwood, cocobolo perhaps) into |_| shape channel routed out in oak moulding as shown below. The channel will be about...
Hey Guys,
Just re-visiting this again, (been very busy at work lately!) I've since picked up some oak moulding as below
257316
I assume that the way to apply this is by mitering the corners...
Thanks for suggestions- i think i will dye the supports ebony, and also put a red trim on them by routing a strip as per sam and painting it red. Will any type of paint do or would i be better use a...
Good one Sam! "the endgrain can hide, but cannot run" ... oh dear ....
So what do you mean by adding round moldings to the posts? Would you have an example to hand?
I am thinking this too..
So : 1. hiding the end grain, but how? Was thinking of some sort of veneer, but what about that top edge of veneer that would be left exposed?
2. Use ebony colored oil to...
Hi Guys,
I have roughly stacked up my hifi rack to see how it looks, and to be honest I think it looks a bit plain and could do with something to help give that wow factor.
I will dowel it...
I will be using spikes too. Will most probably use beech for the build, and dowel the complete structure, with sand inside - will fill the columns as suggested by Carl earlier -
Hello All,
I am coming close to finishing a hifi rack (as shown in below rough sketchup model). This rack is made from American White Oak, dowel joinery, and finished with Danish Oil and a...
Thanks Howard, how about a Danish Oil finish? I willing to put in as much effort as required to get the best possible finish showing the true beauty of the wood.
Thanks again
Hi Guys,
How would you choose to finish these white oak pieces? They will be stacked up with 8" supports at each of the four corners to make a hifi rack.

Thanks

Thanks to all for replies, looks like dowelmax will be a worthwhile purchase! It is also much easier to convince the wife that it only cost a couple of bucks in comparison to a drill press!
Would...
Hi All,
I wish to use a dowel joint to join 4 supports to a rectangular shelf. The supports will be set in from the sides as shown

Just wondering of a dowelmax would be useful here?...
Been quite a while, but I've managed to cut the supports (4" high) and I am ready to start drilling the dowel holes. I've come across the Dowelmax, and think that it may be a worthwhile investment. ...
Thanks guys. Sorry i didn't make it clear, i purchased a makita 5704rk circular hand saw today as it was on discount at my local hardware store
in light of this, would a band saw be a better...
If i get a table saw, will a skill/circular saw be unnecessary?
Thanks Jim, i am extremely safety conscious. I did woodworking classes when i was 16 years old! I've already looked at videos on the dangers of kickback.
what diamter dowels should I get for this? (posts are 2"x2")? Any particular type of dowel recommended or any particular method to install them?
Thanks Greg, I understand.
Looks like either:
1. Qty 1 drill - percussion drill or
2. Qty 2 drills - Non-imapct drill and another drill with hammer action (rotary hammer or hammer drill,...
On the Makita UK website, they list three types of Drills:
1. Hammer
2. Percussion
3. Rotary
See below link

I understand that Hammer drills...
I remember reading on some website that a mechanical two speed gearbox is a great addition in a drill - the slower speed gear really increases the torque and then you can also switch to the other...
Greg, I probably over-estimated the size of hole I would be drilling into concrete. 1/2" is maxd is probably about right.
So then, I should be looking at "percussion drills" as per the Makita UK...
Thanks Guys, I would only need to drill up to 3/4" holes in concrete (and quite rarely at that) and primary use would be woodworking.
I have been on the Makita UK site...
I'm new to woodworking and am looking to buy a suitable plug in drill that will last me. I will use it for occasional masonary work too. It will also be used in a small vertical drill press adaptor....
hi Jim
I prefer the appearance if all tiers are of equal height
why wouldn't you build as one unit?
