I work from home and am working on an upgrade to my work area. I've been having some minor neck and back issues from my computer work, so I'm getting a desktop computer to replace my laptop,...
Kevin, I didn't recall any information of that type, but I looked again and came across the following statements in a old manual.
The motor base is drilled for either 3/4 or 1 Horsepower standard...
I have a really old PM 6" jointer I bought at an auction a few months ago.
The motor is giving me trouble, refusing to start, and also has a noisy bearing.
My question is more about the pulley...
You are both right and wrong and neither. "Boiled" linseed oil contains metal driers. It isn't boiled anymore. A lot of people protest that when completely CURED, any modern finish is food safe. If...
I'm using them too, and like them. I haven't tried the Timberwolf blades either.
I had one of those grizzly chucks on my old lathe. I couldn't ever seem to hold a bowl on with it. Maybe it was just the operator. After dropping a few things, I started using alternate methods. I'm...
A cant hook or peavey is right handy. Mine is from logrite and is wonderful.
Also, you can cut most of the way through a log and then put a wedge (steel, plastic or wood) and then hit it with a...
I'd like to get my hands on a sycamore tree or other interesting wood. I can cut it up and haul it. I'm in Dugger, between Bloomington, Terre Haute, and Vincennes Indiana. There is a lot of nice wood...
Sorry I didn't clarify, the vibration wasn't from the motor itself, but seemed to be from the bed flexing under the twisting action of the tool rest in heavy cuts. (Bigger motor=more twisting...
I just moved into a shop that is reasonably well insulated and around 600 square feet with a concrete floor. There is an old stove in there, but it is dangerously decrepit. The chimney is steel and...
Maybe I should try oak again. I had a few blanks and ruined one of them on the lathe and didn't like the way it looked anyway so I threw away the rest of the blanks. But from the looks of that bowl,...
I had an old Rockwell Lathe that was originally sold with a 1/3 and 1/2HP motors. I upgraded it to a 3/4HP. I was very glad for the power, but had more vibration in the bed and worried sometimes...
Be aware that it will put more stress on your toolrest, bed, bearings, spindle and so forth.
It looks like you have almost exactly the same setup I do except that I have the Oneida cyclone. Mine works tolerably well. If I upgrade, it will likely be to a big cyclone dust collector.
I had that center too. I didn't use it much at all, but it was very noisy under pressure. I wasn't at all impressed. Also, the ring that screws into the back vibrated out.
If you want to use the bandsaw, you could clean your cuts up and true them up with hand planes using various jigs. With the right setup and a bit of skill, you should be able to get better pieces...
I had the problem of green sawdust from sanding and the bandsaw clogging my shopvac filter. It seems to set up like concrete.
I started using the Oneida cyclone mounted on a trashcan and I am much...
There may be no max diameter for using a skew, but you will WISH there was, the first time you get a catch with that skew! I have gotten my worst catches trying that. I have tried it several times on...
The idea of trying to make just one hollow form that takes up the whole thing out of that scares me. If you had done dozens like it, maybe that would be different. If it were a practice piece, it...
For learning on, there isn't anything wrong with a single speed motor. Of course, you will always wish you had EVS, but then again, you will be wishing you had a bigger lathe anyway. Just make sure...
I've got a chunk of Siberian elm that is pretty dry and not big enough for a big project. I may go try doing this today.
Realize that accessories can end up costing more than your lathe. So, if you want to turn bowls and start out with a lathe with a smaller spindle, you will have to either use adapters or buy all new....
Beautiful project. I'm wondering what it would look like with a long neck growing out of the maple lid (say maybe 1/2" to 3/4" high leading into the finial or with a flatter lid with the same...
I had a similar budget and just bought the Powermatic. My second choice was the Jet which I almost bought. I originally thought I would get the Nova DVR, but I don't like that it has a proprietary...
