You are on the right track. You can cut the boards to rough length, add a couple of inches to length and cut them to final length later. Make sure you account for any checks in the boards. The same...

I cut a 44 inch ring out of cedar to hand between 2 post. I plan on securing 4 cedar boardsto the back of the circle. As you are looking at the front of the ring you will see the face of the boards....
