I have a group of teenage boys, a youth group at church, who wants to get together and make their own wooden bow ties. Since I have a couple dozen of my own that I wear regularly to church, I was...
Robert, that is a fantastic idea. Even less chance of slipping. Thanks for this!
Sometimes a blank for a platter is too thin to mount with either the woodworm screw or a face plate, and sometimes a glue block is kinda a pain. In the case of my platter here, the wood piece was...
Forgive my ignorance, I'm sorta new to thinking about grain direction.
Is there such a thing as a quarter sawn spindle? Like, say I have a project calling for a piece of wood 30" long, and 1x1"...
Steve Ramsey (wood working for mere mortals on youtube) inspired me a bit to make a gift card holder. I'm supposed to get a gift this year for my wife's sister (we draw names every year), and I know...
All,
I'm wondering what kind of place I need to contact to get hardwood scraps and cut offs pretty cheap or free. I'm going to be getting into some wood CNC projects, and I'm hoping to just be...
Removing old tile cabinets to install a nice 3cm slab granite. So, looks like the old tile is just adhered straight to a 3/4" ply substrate, which means the tile is coming off so easy. Awesome.

Hah, well, if you consider that I do have a shelf mounted on the ceiling there that has all the bins with Christmas decorations in it, I guess in a way I do have ornaments hanging from the ceiling!
I'm a woodturner primarily, looking to get into some more flatwork and such. I shot a quick video on my youtube channel with a shop tour, since I just got set up in the garage of my new house.

You know that feeling when you haven't turned for like two months because you moved, had to get an electrician in to make the equipment work in the new garage, had to spend a ton of time working on...
So much awesome information here. Thank you all so much for your insights. I've got a lot more research to do before I open my wallet, it appears. I had never even heard of these track saw set-ups...
OK, I'm a lathe guy. I have a good 16" lathe, and a decent 14" bandsaw, both Jet brand. I've come upon a few times when I also wish I had a table saw. But, since I like nice things, I don't really...
Reed, I watched your video this morning about cutting a recess, etc. When you are cutting your recess using your dovetail tool, you talk a bunch about getting your recess to have the same angle as...
I never thout I'd have much interest in natural edged bowls. I like traditionally shaped, regular bowls. But I went for it anyway, and it was really fun to turn!

My wife's friend asked for a couple of towers for a wooden train table she's working on for her kids for Christmas. She wanted the Seattle Space Needle, and the Stratosphere Las Vegas.
So, I...
So, looking at the crushgrind website, it looks like this all means you could make your peppermill as tall as you want, right? The mechanism is all in the bottom few inches, and above that, as long...
Good advice, Steve. Thanks.
Stan, that's exactly the tool I have. I love the harrison specialties tools.
I show my technique for hollowing with that exact tool in this video: http://youtu.be/cmaUUSUQw4E
That's part 2 of...
I usually use a carbide tool for end-grain hollowing, but it's one of those with a slight cup to the profile - not just the round flat one. Works great, cutting from the inside center towards the rim.

Quick video where I make a little wooden family, to match my family (click the youtube link, above) - Dad, Mom, and 2 girls and a boy. A fun...
Tim, that was just the detailer tool from Easy Wood Tools. It's the only carbide too from that brand I own, since I find that brand to be pretty overpriced, honestly. But it is pretty nice, actually....

I've seen some awesome snowmen, tons of detail, great shapes. I went with sort of a basic, whimsical profile on this one, and decided to leave it just as an unadorned profile - no carrot...
So, you turn them to final thickness first, let them dry for 10 days or so, then re-mount them for sanding and finishing, and that's it? When you remount, do you just jam it against the chuck or...
I tried to add an image of a claro walnut bowl I turned last night, but uploading from the iPad is spotty at best.
