hi all, I am thinking of turning a humidor as a gift. I have read that spanish cedar is the best but all i can find online is thin stock. Am wondering if anyone has a good source? Or if you have...
Thanks Brice. Thats good advice. Would I be correct in assuming the ten percent rule applies to this application?
How is this accomplished? I haven't attempted a hollow form as of yet, so I am not sure as to roughing out or turning to finish.
I would think that turning to finish would prove difficult to cap...
Doesn't look like you need much help if that's your FIRST one.
I have turned several flat rimmed bowls but what has helped me the most is the youtube videos that all the experienced turners...
Thanks everyone. This is big leaf maple burl. Looking at the pictures i agree that the transition is abrupt. I believe i got in a bit of a hurry to finish. The bottom doesn't match from inside to...
This is my first attempt at a live edge. It had my nerves fried watching the sharp burl edge so close to my hands. I am a bit of a klutz so I imagined that stitches would be a likely possibility. But...
Awesome thanks. I'll definitely try that.
The little black and purple dots are what I was referring to. I assumed I was burning it. So lemon juice will remove it. How does that process work?
I will make it to the Oly club meeting this week. I hope to make it some day up to your club meeting someday, but not this week. I did try to post photos but it didn't upload. I'm thinking the...
There has been a lot on this forum about madrone lately. I just happened into some of it and am impressed.
This stuff flies off the bowl gouge. And for me, a novice wood turner, it sometimes flies...
Not sure about similarities in between sassafras and cedar, but i have heard the same from a white cedar bowl I turned.
That is beautiful. The grain pattern really turned out well. It appears to be infinitely deep.
Not a stupid question, it is a pottery type kiln. My neighbor is a glass artist and has a kiln sitting unused and offered it to me. Not sure the low end setting, so thats my question. Based on the...
I have been offered a small dry kiln to use for bowls and such. It is 12"×12"×6" tall.
The questions I have are these: first would it be worth using? If so, what settings and duration? The wood...
Thanks everyone. I would prefer that it be used so I'll try the oil finish.
Whats everyone think of CA as a finish for platters? Would it be safe to use for serving? Or just for decoration?
Whats your preferred finish on a platter?
How did you cut the slot into the bowl? I have tried a few different techniques, including a dremel and a coping saw, to mixed results. The slot usually turns out being wider than planned.
Thanks for the tips. I will try the denatured alcohol.
I am having trouble with finishes. My technique is flawed I guess. I tried to use salad bowl finish on one English walnut bowl, and even several weeks later, it feels like it hasn't dried. I wiped it...
Thanks guys. I will give epoxy a try.
Brice, it is a hurricane bowl gouge with factory handle. Nothing special. Turning a new handle sounds like fun. Something I was thinking of doing when I...
I noticed that my 1/2in biwl gouge is loose in the handle. I don't see any cracks in the wood handle, and it appears the glue failed. Is it reasonable to reuse this handle? If so, what to use to...
Curtis, I hadn't thought of that. Would be cool to have a set of platters.
Bruce thanks for the tips. Is there a product that would help preserve that color once it achieves what I like?

Hi fellas, I'm new to turning wood, and new to the forum as well. I'm looking for some advice on a piece of purpleheart I've come across. Its 12"x12"x8". I'm curious as to how it turns, what to...
Burning old cedar power poles always worked for us. Burns hot, so works great with the wood stove. Also smoky, so wouldn't use with an open fireplace.
