Haven't tried a bowl from bloodwood but have for pens. I like it for pens. I think a bloodwood pen was the first one I sold.

Jim,
Glad you liked the antique woodworking shop. My turning club make it. I had a small part in it's creation. It won Best of Show. I wish I could have atttended the symposium.
Make the tool today with the inserts noted in the post from above. All I can say is WOW!! I was amazed at how fast it will cut wood. I roughed out a small bowl in about 5 minutes and I am a slow...
Looks like Grandpa is going to have a fun week. Lots of good memories will be made. I have two grandkids (1 almost 4 and 1 almost 2) just down the road and I sure have a good time with them. I keep...
Nice job on the box. Great history behind it. It would make a nice piece to hand down to the next generation - along with a written copy of the history.
Looks like a very workable setup.
Other option would be to turn a piece of wood with a morse taper and expoy in the all thread instead of using the chuck and and another piece of wood for the...
Very nice LB. It is hard to believe that is your first one. Looks like you got the hang of it.
Very N-I-C-E. Really like the shape of the opening. How long did you let it soak in the DNA - and then how long to dry before you finish turned it?
Ian, thanks I just ordered a box. Curious as to how they will work on a home made tool.
Which of the inserts from Global Tooling is like the ones used of the Ci tools?
Do you know if they also sell the screws used to attach it to the tool shaft?
Really nice functional lathe work. That probably works better than the original and much classier. I have made a few functional items with my lathe - the most recent a steering knob for our backhoe.
Ken,
Thanks for the link and congrats on the new granddaughters.
Amazing piece of work. I guess you had to spin it rather fast with all that dead air space.
I think everyone has convinced me that I should make a winged bowl with them. Now if I can just execute the idea. I have turned a few small ones (and have all my fingers) but not one from a crotch. ...
KEN,
That is really nice - did you turn it?
Do you have a photo of the bottom side?
Thanks,
One big bowl. Did you save the cutoff for other projects - bottle stoppers - ornaments, etc.
Dennis,
Since the pieces are between 3-4" thick would you resaw them again and make two pieces from each one if you were making a platter or wall hanging?
All look great but I agree with Steve, I like the cocobola with the straight corners.
Bob makes very informative videos. I used his tips/videos with his vacuum chuck on my NOVA DVR XP. I have...
BB's are great for the price. I have one and have 2 Sorby's. I like the BB's just as good as the Sorby's and there is a big price spread. Luckly I got a good deal on the Sorby's or I would not have...
If this was your wood how would you turn it?
I split the crotch down the pith. Each piece is app. 4" thick x 16" long x 14" across.
...
Nope. I find the wrench is easier to get into the hole with the round end. I'm not cutting mine off - NO WAY.
Another fan of the Robust tool rest. I have 2.
Dogwood makes great ornaments. It can be turned farily green and usually will not splint. I would not cut one down just to get the wood. The tree is really pretty in bloom.
Here is the Legend of...
Harvey,
I suggest you use the allen wrench a while before you cut off the round end. I find it easier to insert the wrench with the rounded end. But you might not.
I got a pair on rollerblades at a second hand shop for $5 (eight wheels). Lightly used but some light scuffing so I put my 220grit flap sander in the jacobs chuck on the lathe and sanded them smooth....
