Rig a router to hang from a flexible cord... and swing it like a pendulum. The longer the cord the larger the radius.
Mine's in East Orange. Gets seriously heavy usage. Feel free to stop by.
Wow... a question about gluing a couple pieces of 1 bye 3 together... and 2 pages about vacuum pumps... :(
Curved cauls and a clamp on each end. ;)
Use curved cauls to make a simple press... Regular old yellow glue. Done all the time.
You likely won't be happy with the results from contact cement. You certainly won't be happy with...
Whether you make or buy... curved cauls are your friend. An all important often overlooked benefit of using curved cauls is that when the glue starts squeezing out first in the center, then rushing...
Don't fear veneer.
Veneer work is not tricky and anyone can do it. Veneer is just wood. It's just wood sliced thin. You're gluing 2 pieces of wood together, nothing more.
And you don't need...
Kent I wasn't repying to your post or referencing it in any way. I'm sorry if you think I was. I happen to think it's a nice set-up. I was simply referring to the method of starting to plane 3-4"...
Please understand that the last thing I want is a competition either. I am the first to applaud Mike's effort...but as someone said earlier..."why would someone spend good money...?"
I think it's...
Thank you Mike for a great write-up.
I know I need to be respectful about advertising policy... but a few thoughts.
Mike, when asked about tear-out you specify that soft-wood is...
Thumbs up. That's where I buy.
If you can get your hands on it, use 3M microfinishing film instead of sandpaper. It's manufactured to tighter tolerances than sandpaper... all of the cutting surfaces are the same size. The grit...
Glue and clamp.
Give the release mechanism a good smack. Good as new.;)
With curved cauls you can use regular old wood glue and clamp it.. and eliminate all of the problems mentioned. No gumming of the trimmer and more importantly no tear-out. It's glued...Never coming...
It's a shame these are the only 2 (known) options.
Isn't the problem really about spreading clamping pressure?
Wouldn't you just glue it and clamp it...if you could?
That is simply outstanding Bill. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you William. That's about the highest compliment a tool-maker can hear. And if you have an MFT you'll dig this set-up, sent to me by another proud member of the Bowclamp family.

Here's an example. This is a job I built... well the date is stamped right on it.

The desk is black laminate with a maple edge. ...
Well to demonstrate your knowledge and experience with curved cauls you posted 2 projects of cauls that were not curved.:confused:
Yes I did ask for examples of people using shop made...
In that cabinet glue-up Mike,
The cabinet is what, about 14' deep? You have 3 clamps across the width. What if the cabinet was 24" deep? How many clamps would be required? At least one more,...
Mike, thank you for clearing that up. 2 torsion boxes. All the difference in the world.
Thank you for also clearing up the fact that I really don't think you understand what we're talking...
My question is... they work great for what?
Are you using them purely for keeping boards aligned during glue-ups, or as deep jaw clamps to get pressure out in the middle? And if so how far do you...
That's the point exactly. Shim material to pick up the low spots. The problem is that as soon as you insert a shim, the pressure on either side of it is eliminated. If the pressure remained...
Simply stated Mike, Bowclamps will absolutely replace your torsion box. Or do a great job of augmenting it. You'll thank me either way.:D
How do you get pressure out in the middle of the...
