Fantastic work. Now you should turn a set of chessmen to glue to the side!
Like others have said, you nailed the curve. It looks great. Of course, you will always see the wall thickness variation, but I think this is a great first bowl effort.
A natural edge-edge! Love the form. Great concept for use of the bark.
Great looking bowl. I like the soft lines of the rim. May it encourage your wife to make you lots of bread.
There has to be something cool going on in there! If I were you, I would want to cut a few blanks and rough out a bowl or two out of it. Then I would wrap the wood in newspaper and let it dry for a...
Very nice. I love the way the grain swirls around the bowl of this one. Beautiful work, Leo.
Cuba, I wish my country would let me go to Cuba. Have a great trip!
Cool "stuff". I really like the burls.
Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Yes, Dan, I agree that another crack might be coming. I tried to let it sit long enough to get all its cracking over with, but I tend to get ahead of...
I though you said they were Juniper? It sure looks like ceder to me, too. Love the wood.
You have quite a study in rim treatments for these three. I think I like the one in the foreground the...
You know what, I really seem to get creative when I can't get to my lathe and do anything about it! See, it's happening right now. I'm at work.
Here is a new one. I got the wood out of a tree that I dropped in the back yard (across my fence ). After fixing the fence, I roughed out a bowl form but it cracked pretty severely. I...
I always thought the lathe was just a big Spirograph! Cool technique. Wait, a minute, that toy wasn't a spirograph. I mean the thing where you put the little piece of paper on it and spun it while...
Thanks, everyone.
Those are beautiful Baxter. Tear out has been a constant problem for me too. I think I generally get too aggressive with my cuts then I try to make up for it with a scraper and then sandpaper. I...
Newbie to the Creek maybe, but that's not newbie work! Very nice looking piece. I had to take a hard look to make sure it wasn't basket weave. Welcome to the Creek. Look forward to seeing more of...
Perhaps you should ask your insurance agent :-) Really, it depends on a lot of things. What glue are you using? How big is the waste block? Is the joint nice and flat or are there gaps to fill? ...
Nope, I turned it down, but it is still about an eighth of an inch. Pierced with a drill bit then cleaned up with a dremel and carving burr. I was pleased that my seven year old son said "is that...
Steve, These pieces are great. I particularly like the Cherry. I think that the dark band and the dark bark complement each other very well. IMHO using gold, or any metallic leaf, would draw...
Hello everyone! I haven't posted anything in a while because I haven't made much lately. But I did get around to a redo. Over a year ago, I had a catch and cracked the rim of a sycamore vase I was...
I've been aiming to try the plastic paint from Rustoleum. I got a can to cover some plastic parts and I though it looked waterproof. It's on my list of techniques to try. Anybody tried it?
Well, I think it's a beauty, George. Very interesting piece.
Thanks, all. I'm going to get out my honing equipment then and get to work.
Hey guys, sorry for dropping out of the conversation for so long. Just haven't had much shop time lately and what I did have wasn't lathe work:(. And on that point, when I did get some time on the...
Jim, thanks for the link. I keep looking at the pyrography rigs on eBay and I say to myself, " my high school electronics teacher could have made that for next to nothing".
OkY, after reading the...
Mike, I disagree. Although it could be done with a template and router, the poster says that it is a band sawn box. That means that the bottom and the lid are sliced off and the center section is...
