How far down have you already chopped? It's hard to tell from the picture, but it doesn't look like you have gone all that deep down yet. If it isn't that deep yet, there may still be enough...

... For when you get frustrated and start smashing on it with a hammer. :)
Ah, diamond file. Now it sounds more reasonable.
A grinding stone in a Dremel would save some effort.
I picked up the shooting plane in last year's special. There aren't many of those, and they go fast. There were quite a few good planes available this year. I've picked up a number of planes in...
I'll take my LV jointer over a woodie jointer (I have an ECE) any day.
It's too late now, but you could have gotten a nice discount this morning at the LV Cyber Monday sale.
Good info! Thanks for the tip.
However, if the bit is soft enough that you can file the notch with a file, it is way too soft to bother using.
Count me in please.
Both the LV and LN are great tools. The difference is a preference thing. I have the LV, which I find much more comfortable to hold and therefore use.
And yes, that LN small bronze shoulder...
Doing hundreds of these holes is going to be a huge task. I would seriously be considering farming this out to some automated equipment.
Getting consistent slip fit holes is not simple to do...
Nice new toy, Gary. If it HAS to live in the wood shop, definitely keep it covered well. Sawdust will greatly accelerate wear on the ways and gears, and make a real mess if you keep the ways oiled....
The turner's tape from Woodcraft is pretty good. The double sided tape from Stewart McDonald is even better, but it isn't cheap. I don't know exactly what the StewMac tape is -- most likely it is...
I have a LV medium, but I would recommend the large.
As for the Stanley 90 series planes, I really hate those things. Can't get them to work worth a darn. Uncomfortable to use. Not worth...
I have a lot of cherry that has the same issue. It isn't about moisture in this case, it has been inside and dried for a long time and is very dry. There is a lot of stored stresses in the boards...
I think pretty much any of the commonly mentioned chucks will do fine. I haven't done anything on a wood lathe where the amounts of runout involved would make any difference, and you really have to...
That's awesome Russell. Great idea! And thanks to Wally for sharing his experience and his fantastic turnings with us. I think we have all learned a few things from Wally.
Count me in please.
Yes, for the fox wedging, bore the hole the size of the handle, stopping before you go all the way through. Use a gouge or similar to taper the hole so that it is bigger at the top. (Only taper it...
I don't have any issue if this guy wants to use a Dremel for his work (though a Dremel is particularly awful to use even in the corded world), but his choice of using it in this particular venue...
At the very least, bore and thread it deeper and screw a new handle in. But I wouldn't do it that way. My experience is that a screw-in handle on a mallet is a bad idea because an off-center hit...
It looks pretty good to me too! I know what you mean about looking for something to keep in the center. I have started with big pods and had to keep turning through inclusions or depressions until...
Always love seeing joints like that! Good stuff!
You can successfully make a plane out of pretty much any species of wood if you really want to (or are limited in choices). Wenge shouldn't have any wear issues and shouldn't split as long as you...
A bench, tool box, saw bench, assembly table, and room to work in 100 sq ft? I really don't see that happening unless you are willing to stray a bit (at least temporarily) into that other 200 sq ft....
The Brown & Sharpe stuff I have gotten recently has been pretty poor ... no better than the average Chinese import. They are not what they used to be.
I have some PEC stuff and it is quite good. ...
My LN planes have all been in paper. LV planes come in the blue bags. Maybe that is what you are thinking of.
