Looks like Stihl might have an opportunity in the roughing gouge market...
Beautiful piece, Wally.
Very, very nice, Bob. I don't know that I'd be real crazy about sticking my fingers into a moving workpiece like that but notwithstanding, an extremely educational video. Thanks for posting.
I think you've opened at least a small can of worms.;) Like Bernie, I have three 1/2" gouges, but ground at 40, 60 and 85 degrees - all with a fingernail grind. That way, I can ride the bevel on just...
John (and guys): I can relate - on both the lathe and work counts! :( I have some really spectacular 20"+ cherry burls, 2' Box Elder, American Elm... all of which seriously challenge my Jet 1220....
Beall offers a 1 1/4x8 spindle tap. (It sounds like someone might have made an "adding machine error" substituting the "5" you saw for an "8".) To answer your other question: you can certainly buy a...
Yeah, Jeff... you probably could use a few more pieces;) Seriously, beautiful wood! Nice gloat....
Ditto to what the guys have said! It's been a fantastic ride :D Happy turning!
Beautiful work, Bernie. The proportions work nicely - and a I particulary like the finial and the way you tied the body into the base:D.
It might not be terribly fashonable, but I suggest a simple walnut or mineral oil finish (think Mike Mahoney or Richard Raffan.) Both are food-safe and won't break off and get mixed with whatever...
Good choice. I've Michelins for years on my trucks and never had a problem:D
I sure have to agree with Scott. That is an elegant solution, Dave:D Can't wait to see your first turning!
Great job, Chris. Like many of us, I'm not too thrilled with having to reach around the workpiece to shut things off when something goes off kilter. I admire your initiative.
Appreciate the feedback, guys. I think I've developed a "need" to make one myself. Particularly like the idea of picking up an old one from an appliance store.
Thanks for the suggestion, Frank. I saw several of those threads. My question was more along the lines of what folks have experienced in terms the results of finish-turning the dried rough-outs v....
I've heard some conversation that you can set up an old refrigerator or freezer with some light bulbs in the bottom, some holes (and perhaps some other bells and whistles) and use it to dry blanks...
I agree with Bernie - that is some amount of productivity! Nice work also :)
The 1220VS is certainly nice, but the plain 1220 isn't bad to start. I've had mine for a year and it has been a terrific "teacher." As the guys have already said: it "teaches" you to take light...
Bernie,
Agree with the others: great save of a beautiful piece! Stuff happens - guess that's why a face shield is recommended...:)
Dave,
You have done a fantastic job! I like the thoughtful approach to hooking-up the motor and VFD. And what I really like is the information about what was included with your Vic.
I also...
Condolences, Edward. I had a similar problem last year when I tried to buy a Rikon mini. I ended-up cancelling the Rikon order after many weeks and buying a Jet 12-20 - which I'm now looking to...
Looks great, Dave. Can't wait to see the end result.
I broke down and called Grizzly's tech support yesterday and here's what they told me:
The banjo extension is supposed to be removable and the tool rest is supposed to fit in its...
Agreed. It is a compromise situation - and your solution is probably as good as any. (Great job on the cabinet by the way....)
That's a beautiful form, Curt. Keeping it together is certainly an exercise in technique, but creating a piece of art in the process is really impressive. Love to see more of your work
