I purchased a Delta Bench Top Mortiser and after getting it setup I have to remove/clean off the coating of ??? gook that was used as a protective coating during shipping.

I was finally able to spend a little time in the shop this weekend and even better get something finished.

I am going to make a outdoor table from the Walnut top and ??? legs (not sure what they are), shown below.
But I want to get your opinion on what is the best way to protect it in order to preserve...

There are crews in my local area clearing trees the pose a risk to the power lines. I noticed these down yesterdy and wondered what they were.

Thanks to all for their input, I'n going to give the Danish Oil a try. My questions are Where do I get it, How do I apply it and are there any safety concerns with the oil or what I use to appy it ?...
One is a holder for a my daughters handprint the other is 'In Box' basically a paper holder.
