I use a spray can of PAM (kitchen non stick spray) to lub the blade and guides, works great.
I only use the ceramic guides. I had the same problem with buildup when sawing green wood so I switched to ceramic guides, they work great.
I've made several chess sets, see http://www.winburn.com/ViewItem.asp?SeqNbr=160.
Wasn't an ad, just offering to help.
That's my bowl lathe you have pictured. I've made a few upgrades to the lathe, a new banjo and 18" bed. I've also upgraded to a variable speed 3 phase motor with a VFD. The motor is on a pivot,...
I remember that well...
I have a friend with a Serious Lathe that just quit. The VFD seems completely dead, no error codes, no nothing. Does anyone have any ideas? Does A VFD have fuses inside? He was coring a 12" bowl...
My motor will go to zero rpm, never had a problem, but when I'm running for long periods at low speed I do as Olaf suggest and feel the motor. My motor is an inverter duty motor (made for use with a...
My bar is cold roll steel, don't know much about types of steel so can't help you there. Thanks for your comments about my homemade lathe, it still gets a lot of use. I have recently upgraded my...
The total length of my banjo is 12", I get very little deflection even when the eye bolt is in the center. The banjo works well for my use. I maybe would go 1 1/4" with a 15" banjo.
I made my banjo with 1" round bar stock.

Try Brazing Rod at your local welding supply.
I found and turned this piece of osage orange in 2011. The piece is 6 1/2 inches high and 3 1/2 inches in diameter. There is almost 2 1/2 turns (twists) from top to bottom. The piece of twisted...
The best screws I've found are the blue concrete/masonary screws. They are very hard and the teeth are serrated. I use 1/4" size, you can get most any length with phillips head or hex head.
Tom, My lathe has a 12" capacity, the base plate distance from the center has to be somewhat matched to the uprights distance from the bed to center. For a larger lathe (16", 18" or more) the base...
Thanks Guys, for the comments, I think I'll skip the patent issue.
Dan, I enjoyed building the one for my own use, a second one would be WORK and I'm retired.
Curtis, The plate is clamped to...
My new home built steady rest. This is my own design, I've never seen another like it. The range of the steady rest is approximately 3 inches to just over 8 inches. This covers maybe 95+ percent...
I picked up this plastic at a salvage yard, it machines well and yes, you're right, I plan to make non-marring jaws for expanding inside of lidded boxes, pencil boxes, etc.
Dale
Reed,
I have a 1" thick tough plastic sheet about 2' square, don't know what type it is, it's very tough but not brittle. I will turn the back of the jaws with the tenon that fits the recesses in...
I would like to make some custom Jaws for my VM120 chuck. Can anyone give me the radius for the grooves and of the screw hole pattern for the jaws, or point me in the right direction to find the...
I turn a lot of pens using many types of wood including "Stonewall" Jackson Prayer Tree white oak. After turning the pens to size and sanding to 1000 grit I flood the pen with 2 or 3 coats of thin...
Use a 1" x 6" long bolt with 1" x 8tpi as Marvin suggests, screw a 1" x 8tpi face plate on to the bolt and mount the plywood platform on top of the face plate.
I use Colt Maxi Cut Forstner Bits with the morse taper holder and extension. These are the best I've used, no set screws or slippage of the extension. These are available from Craft Supplies, Packard...
I bought my 3 phase motor (1 hp) and VFD drive (2 hp drive) from Automation Direct in Atlanta, GA about 4 or 5 years ago. Been very pleased with my system and Automation Direct was very helpful...
