I used a Cheezy Forstner Bit (tm) and spent half my time sharpening.
Ah, youth.
Does anyone use them for engraving/inlay work?
OK, I'm wondering in here from the Neanderthal forum so be kind. :o
Would the Bosch Colt et al. handle shallow template engraving well? I'm thinking of adding some engraved flourishes to some...
I am about to purchase several planes I have been looking at and just wanted to avail myself of the fruit of the collected wisdom of this board.
Should I get a LN 140 skew block or wait for the LV...
90% of the public doesn't know sharp. They think that the chisels bought down at the local Harbor Freight are quite sharp enough, right out of the box.
Very nice! I'm thinking about making a tote and knob like Derek put on his LVLAS.
For the most part I have all of the planes set up nicely and they work well, (except the #112) I just like the varsatility, build quality, durability and adjustability of the LV planes. They did...
Here’s the dilemma: In the past I’ve pooh poohed the “new fangled” Lee Valley and Lie Nielsen planes as being expensive and unneeded. Then, in a fit of insanity I ordered an LVLAS to replace my...
I hadn't thought of that. Great tip, especially with the ginormously thick blades on the BUS and LAJ.
The BUS. Grab a 38 and 50 degree blade to go with it. I now wish I had gone this route rather than starting out with the LAS and then getting the LAJ.
I'll second Clint here. I got my dad's Starretts ( he was a tool and die maker in the 40's-60's) and I would never part with them.
MUST...NOT...POST...GRATUITOUS....WOODY....JOKE
Me? I just gave the local Fed Ex guy a bottle of 20 year old scotch and told him to leave anything marked "Lee Valley" at my door.
Here's a pic of my converted #220..Pardon the dust...

I don't know why I just can't post the pic....
I did something just like that. I had a roached old maroon #220 that I cut the toe off of and re-contoured the cheeks on my belt sander. VERY useful, especially in those areas where you want the...
I have ONE of those...Grrrr:(. Good with and across the grain but not good against it, and I would think that flipping it over and using the edge as the guide might not work.
In the past I've always cut chamfers freehand using my #4 or my 60 ˝. While they look OK, if I sight down the length of a long one I can see the undulations. I have always written this off as the...
I own the Clifton 410 (along with a Record 073 and a Record "3 in 1") and will probably be trading it up for the LV medium. I like the adjustable mouth and the better grip on the LV. Now....I just...
Try St. James Bay Tool Company for rough kits.
Now that the prices of some Lee Valley planes are functionally equivalent to Lie-Nielsens (the LV low angle jack is $199 plus ~$12 shipping and the LN LAJ is $210 with free shipping at FTJ) is anyone...
Because I'm in the market for a LAS I asked the seller to put a rule on the bottom. The answer was that it had no discernible warps. I also looked up the properties of ductile iron and came away...
On another site with a Classified forum they have a seperate "Feedback Forum" where buyers and sellers can leave feedback on transactions. To check or leave feedback you just do a forum search for...
In just about every other board I frequent the thread title will indicate whether there are any new posts since I last visited, either by color or by actual number. The titles here seem to only do...
Do you radius a blade on a LAS differently than on a regular bench plane? I ask this question because it seems that the effective radius (as presented to the wood) would be larger on the same blade...
