Was a pipefitter most of my life and welded most of the time. Unless you are going for nuclear grade welding a mig welder would be fine for the type of welding you want to do

On the kind you are presently using, they make them for 3 differnt weight ranges. I had one that on a 30lb lid I had to jump on to get it closed. You may have the wrong weight ones.
