  1. Accuracy

I have 2 questions for you. Since this "misalignment" is this small, any chance that the centers you're using to make this test are responsible? If the alignment is really off by a 64th, will this...

    power switch

A point of interest... A continuity tester for a switch isn't always an accurate method of checking its operation. A lot of switches will test good but can't handle a power load. Even light switches...
  3. From The Flat Earth Society

A thought.... Marry them both. Use your flat work skills to assemble the boards into the stock for segmented turning. No big hunks of tree trunk, no waiting for the wood to dry, etc. You cut up...

    I had one...

No matter what, tell him to get a chuck that has spindle adapters for it. Then no matter what he upgrades to, all he'll have to do is buy another adapter for the chuck. That's what I did.

    Protection

    Art-
I know what you mean. I suspect most of us have been there, done that, AND knew we shouldn't have. Thanks for the reminder.

    protection

Kevin - Lots of choices... However make sure you have protection that's rated "NIOSH rating N95". If you use one that isn't rated that way you may be lulling yourself into a false sense of...

    clock

Jason - The wood is laminated maple or sure looks like it. I drilled a hole for a clock insert finished it and gave it to a bowling nut I know. BTW, getting the plastic off it is a real trip. Long...

    Finishing?

Chuck - Thanks for the input. That was the web site that I'd considered ordering from too. I was interested in the plan & material pack option. I thought I'd try to cut the gears myself and worst...

    Thanks for the help

After much consideration, I've decided to get another chuck insert. If I have to swap out the inserts too many times I may just have to bite the bullet and get another chuck. It's the most expedient...

    Thanks

John - Thanks again for your input. I'll leave the thread active for a little while in case any Creeker has built one of these clocks. I'd rather get some input from here than another site where I...

    Thanks for the help

Chris - Their price was $74.99+. Their web site directed me to a local store. That store wanted $66.95 + tax. The search is still on. As a last resort I may end up using Hilel's recommendation....

    Thanks

    John -
I've been to that site and it does seem to have a lot going for it. I don't like to call the store owner for a testamonial on his product. It's the same reason you don't ask a used car...

    Thanks for the help

I would like to thank everyone for all the suggestions. BUT...I need to hook up with someone who has actually made one... I never had any problem finding sources of plans or kits. If you have made...

    I've looked

There are quite a few places I could go to get plans or kits. I need feedback/review from someone who's made one. To complicated a project to just take a shot in the dark if you know what I mean.

    floating tenons

When I made a coffee table, I had a similar issue. I ended up notching the lower shelf ( notching the legs would weaken them too much) and using floating tenons to secure it. use the tenons on the...

    Sn2

Ken - I have a SN2 with a 1-1/4 insert and want to use it on a 1x8 lathe. The reason I'm looking for a spindel adapter is that I don't want to keep changing out the chuck inserts. I know that's an...

    Looked there already

Ken - Thanks for the suggestion but the adapter they had was 1-1/4x8 to 1x8. That goes the wrong way. My chuck is 1-1/4 and I want to use it on a lathe with 1x8. Thanks anyway.

    Wooden gear clock plans

Would anyone who's make one of those wooden gear clocks suggest the best place to get plans/hardware for one? I recently saw one and was really impressed with it. Thanks in advance.

Looking for a spindel adapter source

I'm looking for an inexpensive spindel adapter (1x8 to 1-1/4). I don't want to spend much more than it would cost to get another insert for my scroll chuck($25). The only ones I have found so far are...
