my vote would be for option #2. go with the 1/4" dowel, i think the 1.25" of wood/tenon would be plenty strong.

that is a very good point....and something i would have figured out on about the third side. :D
the only problem i have had in the past with mahogany is that you sometimes get reversing grain which isn't the most fun to plane but other than that it is a beautiful wood which is nice to work...

easy to install and use. it is a well designed tool and i am usually not a fan of "add on style" gadgets (which this is most definitely not).
