I think everything is just getting "downsized." Not only plywood. Have you put a caliper on a 2x4 recently. The ones from Home Depot are more like 1-7/16 thick.
What really annoys me isn't a 12...
I put 1/2" name brand (Poly Twist?) on my Delta drill press. It really did reduce vibration. I'll work my way around the shop as funds permit.
I'm pretty sure of two things: mortise and tenon joints are stronger than biscuits; and we aren't supposed to use hide glue on biscuit joints, because hide glue is reserved for reproduction purists....
My Dewalt Compound Miter Saw has a dust collection port on the back. Not 100% efficient, but it leaves a smaller mess than my drill press or router table do; and my router table has dust collection,...
In the past, my woodworking was mostly confined to garden boxes and repairs. I made a few small boxes as gifts, but until I retired I had no tilme. It took almost 2 years to complete a "weekend"...
Since I don't have a commercial shop, and have no commercial aspirations, The 12" Grizzly J/P wasn't a compromise. The spiral cutterhead is great, and switching back and forth takes less time than a...
John,
I made a rack like Dan Forman's. I made several extra spaces, and it over-filled in less than 2 weeks.
The rack is great. I considered PVC as others have recommended. But I seem to...
I had a similar experience with Grizzly and a broken part on my new J/P. It was in my hands in like 2 days.
I made one. I like the fact that I don't have to move the rip fence. I made a jig like the Rocker one. It works, but requires moving the rip fence for every cut. The sled is dead simple,...
Nice handles. I made some this weekend, too. I'm practicing prior to make up an hors douvres set for my wife for Christmas. Found some cherry lurking in the wood bin and gave it a go. Pics to...
I was wondering about epoxy. Thanks, Bernie.
Thanks, Chris. I'll try that.
I'm also a lefty. My first turning experience was Memorial Day weekend this year at David Ellsworth's class. My first ever cut on a lathe was right-handed. I wasn't even thinking about it: it...
This seems like a really basic question, and I haven't seen it asked in this forum. I'm using PSI penturners CA glue, the stuff in the pink bottle. It's supposed to be gap-filling. I rough up the...
My dad had a no-name scroll saw and he hated it because of the vibration. I had been lusting for a DW for some time, and I finally had a project that needed a scroll saw cut: a bank for my...
I bought the Grizzly 12 inch J/P, partly because I don't understand having a 12 inch planer and only a 6 inch jointer, and partly because it's one machine instead of 2.
As I recall, the 10 inch...
I justify woodworking the same way my son-in-law justifies deer hunting: I love it. Same with sailing when I was younger.
You can no more make furniture that costs less than manufactured stuff...
I have a Grizzly G0634. I frequently get snipe on the leading edge, but it's too small to measure. I have a digital caliper that reads down to 1/128, and it can't see the snipe, but I sure can...
Black walnut is toxic to many other plants. Only bluegrass seems to grow under it reliably. But black walnut lumber is not toxic to humans.
In a recent WW mag, I read a technique for sealing...
I've been amazed at the number of compressors that show up on craigslist. A few every month. I almost wish I didn't already have one...:)
I'll just jump in here to add that I bought a 691 that arrived about December last year. The packaging was undamaged; the fit and finish were good. It needed a minimum of adjustment to get straight...
Dave,
I buy from Braucht's Dry Kiln in Milheim. BRAUCHT'S KILNED LUMBER (814-574-5666).
I got 50 bf of QSWO at a good price and almost no waste. He also carries cherry, walnut, poplar, etc.
I bought the Grizzly 12" jointer/planer with spiral cutterhead. It leaves detectable tool marks that must be scraped or sanded out. But the marks are more uniform and much easier to deal with than...
