The answer is, it depends. It depends on the piece you're making. Does it require long pieces; long wide pieces? I can usually get 7/8" out of 4/4 rough lumber, and especially if I'm only showing...

Half blind dovetails front and back, 1/2 to 5/8" poplar or maple, 1/2" prefinished maple ply bottoms, Accuride 3132EC glides (undermount, not visible).
I went to the show in Somerset, New Jersey and stopped by the Force Machinery exhibit to talk to the Festool people about the inaccuracy problem with the Domino end stops, or hammerhead attachments...
Nope, not paranoid. Years ago, when my wife and I were first married, she did some house cleaning and one task was oiling the wood furniture with a linseed oil concoction. When she finished, she...
You might check your line voltage before you complain to P.C.
I haven't made any major power tools, but I know a professional millworker here in Summit that has. He had a big job some years back to supply all the custom millwork in a hotel that was being built...
That is nice. My wife and I are building a new house for ourselves (we're builders) and I thought about doing that in my basement shop, but we're on a rocky site and just to get to grade for a...
I run a ten inch dado set on a Delta RT40, which saw is capable of running a sixteen inch blade. I really don't see why, given what a dado set up is usually called upon to do, that anyone needs any...
Interesting posts. Both are apparently excellent. Some prefer one, some the other. Generally, I have read that the Fein is quieter, and that seems to be the main point in its favor. Otherwise,...
If you want quiet, go with the Fein or the Festo. But I don't think the Festool Mini has HEPA filtration, so you might consider moving up to the CT22 or CT33.
Too bad Bessey bought Gross Stabil and took them off the market, because they were, in my opinion, far superior.
Something's wrong if you're getting those kind of results. Is the blade good and sharp? Do you have it tensioned as much as possible? With a good blade like an Olson, you can tension to the max....
Nothing silly about this question, and something I have thought about frequently. I build my houses with porticoes or front porches whenever the zoning ordinance allows me the space to do so. It's...
Look at our website for an example of the doors I build for our spec homes. They are 2 1/4" thick, laminated stiles, solid rails. The panels are "trapped" between panel moldings on both sides that...
To this builder/cabinetmaker, the big thing about this saw is its supposed dust collection capability. We've been doing really good trim work for years with other brands of sliding compound miter...
Just bite the bullet and get the walnut. I have used quite a bit lately, and the FAS I get here in New Jersey is beautiful stuff...no knots at all. Costly, yes; it's running up there with genuine...
Well, I guess the consensus is Honduran Mahogany. So there you have it.
It's mahogany. From the pictures, it looks like genuine mahogany, or what used to be called Honduras Mahogany. I work with it a lot...
Probably he's referring to BOCA, but it wouldn't comply in most of the U.S. regardless, I don't believe. The handrail should be continuous. Where the stair makes the turn with the "twister",...
Not to mention the potential liability of doing things that aren't up to code and not permitted, not inspected, etc. If there's a fire sometime in the future and it is traced to electrical work done...
You misunderstand what is meant by a surface foot or you would not disagree. To measure the work done by the sawyer in surface feet will provide him (or her) more money on the basis of the number of...
Charging by the surface foot makes more sense. Think about it. Width of board times length and thickness is of no concern, nor should it be. But hey, I don't own a sawmill.
Very nice work. My only question is why do the back splat lines not follow the line of the upper curved rail of the back? I know it's just a design consideration, and everyone's design "eye" is...
That's certainly true about machine shop innovations and practices making their way into woodworking. One of my favorite classes in high school was the metal shop; really cool making things with...
HSS is used in my shop for custom profiles in my shaper tooling. It is also used almost exclusively for molder tooling in the millwork shops around here (North Central New Jersey). I don't see any...
