Afzelia Burl Bowl & Pens **PICS**

I managed to get in the shop yesterday, turned a bowl and made a couple of pens from the Afzelia Burl bowl blank that Waymon Campbell was so gracious to bring me last week. This was my first experience with this species. It was very dense/heavy. I managed to get 6 penblanks from the remaining wood after cutting the square blank. I turned 2 of them. The photos do not do justice to this wood. The stuff is gorgeous ! ! !

Bowl is 7" x 2 1/4". After the oil finish cures I will apply a good coat of paste wax and buff.

I also made these 2 pens - I have 4 more blanks prepped and hopefully will turn those later this week:

Oh, I like...I like! Truly, a beautiful wood and you done it justice, Ken! One of these years, I may be able to see if my lathe still works or not. When I do, I can only hope it comes out half as nice as your stuff here!

    Question for Waymon

...was that some of the wood that you bought from us during your recent visit?

Mike - It sure is. I gifted Ken with a sample and also left a larger one with Bill Grumbine.

Ken - That is one sweet look'in bowl. Gotta love that figure.

Bill - Can't wait to see what you do with your blank.

Very nice looking Ken! I am sitting on my piece (well, not really sitting on it) waiting to be struck by inspiration. Right now I am thinking a square edged bowl.

    Hi Waymon

Right now I am showing it off to people who come into the shop! Like I mentioned to Ken, I am thinking square edged bowl, since it is such a regular shape and so well cut. Thanks again for such a beautiful piece!
