    DC Remote Motor Starters

I have a Grizzly 3HP cyclone that has a magnetic motor starter/switch with an infared remote. The problem I'm faced with is that the remote is a line of sight remote, and the collector is located in the next room to keep the noise down and the dust out of the shop. So each time I want to fire up the collector, I have to open the blast gate, open the door, fire up the collector, then cut. After, I have to reverse the process.

I was wondering if any of you know of a radio frequency based magnetic motor starter source. I have tried "The Long Ranger" and it does not have the capacity to handle my collector, the breaker on the unit pops every time I try to start up.

I am looking for a unit that will replace the whole Motor starter/switch mechanism.

    Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.

A few folks make infrared repeaters/extenders. The normal use is to allow your remote to work your entertainment electronics while your nice looking cabinet doors are closed. Here's some stuff. I think Rockelr carries them as well: http://www.amazon.com/CHANNEL-Remote...4150960&sr=8-4

I've used a Long Ranger 220V unit on a 3hp Oneida (14 FLA) with ok results. I purchased the DC and Long Ranger used, and the prevous owner had removed the overload reset from the switch and straight wired the connections. Perhaps not well-advised, but the contacts continue to work fine.

Better advised is, IF you still own your Long Ranger, use its 220V switch to power the coil of a 20A 2-pole contactor. Use this contactor as your On/Off switch for the DC. In effect this makes a *remote magnetic motor starter*. I did just that to power my 5hp rotary phase converter on/off, remotely! Works like a charm!

I have the same situation, as my Griz 440 is in the attic above my shop. I just bought some wire and a few connectors, extended the switchbox assembly down into the work area and mounted it to the wall of my shop. A few feet of wire is much less expensive than buying a whole new remote switch.

I have the Carlon system that I bought from ClearVue Cyclones. My cyclone is in another room. I have one remote at the lathe and one at the bandsaw. The one at the bandsaw is completely not line of sight but no problem starting and stopping. It is radio frequency based.
