Polished Gun Metal Money Clip

So my sister brings me a polished gun metal money clip to engrave with 3 initials - simple right? Why can't I get this to engrave. I bought the CerMark spray and followed the directions exactly but was able to wipe off the initials without much pressure at all. Did I purchase the wrong product?

I'm willing to bet the clip is coated with a clearcoat to keep the metal from tarnishing/scratching. You need to laser this off first.

How do I do that? If I try to laser it without the cermark, nothing happens.

don't move it, or come up with a jig to put it back exactly as it was when you burned off the clear coat.
