I'm making some painted blocks, and for the last few pieces, I ran out of the maple I was using, so I'm substituting oak.
What can I use to fill in the pores so that you won't see the grain once it's painted?

Any wood filler from Lowe's or Home Depot will work. I have used Elmers.
Also have used this from Rockler.

prime first than use light wieght or vinyl spackle
then sand and paint
I think the color of the grain will hide pretty well if you prime it properly (I've used Zinsser BIN - shellac based).
However, the texture of the grain will show thru since oak's opengrained. I was able to fill the grain on painted oak by using a high solids primer like BIN. Sand it smooth when it dries, and then *don't* remove the sanding dust. Paint right over it.
