Found a Trojan, How do I..

get rid of it?? I upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2005 this morning and it found LOTS of viruses. I deleted all that it could fix but it couldn't quarantine this one. DOWNLOAD,TROJAN (unable to repair this file) I found the file but couldn't delete it. Started in "Safe" mode, but the AV wouldn't scan. Had problems and had to shut down. Found the file again in safe mode but still couldn't get rid of the file. Any suggestions? Would it be deleted if I did a complete recovery? I'm running XP on a Compaq machine. If I use the recovery disks I made, can I re-format the hard drive with them? MAN, I hate computers when they don't work right!

    Hey Joe

    Sorry to hear about this.

    Try this:
    http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/da...ad.trojan.html

Or just go to: http://www.sarc.com/ & do a search for your specific version.

Was the trojan found in an email. If it was then NAV would not be able to repair the file (correct action). Look at your settings for email. I recommend the setting "Repair then silently delete if unsuccesful".

    Tom,

Tried to go to both places but couldn't. Gonna try restore to go back to original. If you don't hear from me, happened.

    Michael,

I don't know where it came from. Gonna try Restore. From what I've heard, it might be the best option.

    Thanks,

    Trojans and stuff

Joe, I'm no expert but i think that before you go trying a complete restore you should try some adware, spyware programs like spybot or ad aware and a real good one is hijack this. You can find tons of helpful software a
    majorgeeks.com
    download.com
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn
    And tryhttp://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
    for a free av.
A firewall is always a good idea. I use zone alarm, available at zonelabs.com

Much of this software is free. Norton is very expensive and you can get equal or better protection for free.My computer has been absolutely clean for over a year now.
    Good luck

I've had luck in the past renaming the file and then deleting it. Right click/rename... change the last three letters to something like GGG or what ever, hit enter and delete.
The significant problems we encounter cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.

The penalty for inaccuracy is more work

    Thanks!!

I restored the computer back to original. Actually was able to get back the LOML's games I downloaded for her without re-buying them. Reinstalled Norton I.S.2005 and it is working perfectly (Knock on wood!). A question though, how do you know how to configure the firewall? How do you know what to let in and what not to? This stuff sure can be confusing!

BTW, I downloaded the recover CD's to a partition on the hard drive. Will I go THERE to restore from now on if I have to, and how would I get to it?

Thanks again, Joe - glad to be virus free
