Personally, even though most consider them a cheap shortcut, I like the use of corner blocks in those situations. If they are scaled correctly, and have a subtle finial on the bottom, the appropriate use can add something to the trim.

John's suggestion is good too. To do those joints well you would have to be either very patient or exceptionally experienced, or good with caulk and paint to hide the seams that smoothly.

I don't know of a good formula. Here's a picture of what you're aiming for. I would cut some scrap wood, lay it against the wall and mark the points where the edges intesect.

I purchased a "cut and crown" kit a while back and it is fantastic.
Not only does it make the process quicker and safer - The waste is really reduced.
I have no affiliation -- I bought at one of the woodworking shows.
In my younger days I built custom homes. In more than one occasion I had to make trim like that. I didn't know 1/2 of what I know now so you can immagine the scrap pile I made from time to time.
