Value of a used Jet 1642 Lathe

I have been entertaining the idea of purchasing a lathe. I believe the Jet 1642 will be a good choice with my budget. Been looking around for a used lathe and was curious about what the price range would be for a used lathe. Any ideas or input would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mike

    Mike,
Look for rust, top to bottom. Take a level that you know is spot on.
Check for vibration, once you are happy with levelness (is that a word).Next I would check run out on the spindle.
Use the spur drive center to the live or dead center which ever it has and make sure the points line up.
Turn on the lathe with and with out pressue from tailstock end,( with a spindle piece of wood installed) and see if the head stock or bearings heat up, beyond means.
Listen to it. If it has a huge noise (like bearings) Or if any of the above doesn't suit you Then I would pass.
    Good luck.

1 1/2 hp, no accessories, good condition: $1200-1300
    2 hp, " " , " " 1500-1700

Great lathes by the way. Excellent bang for the buck.

Oh, even if you find one with bad bearings, knock off a couple hundred and buy it. Bearings are cheap and easy to put in, and then you are talking about a real good deal. Rust is easy to paint over, and is just cosmetic, unless the thing has been under water. Recent thread on Jet color match listed a dead on match from a big box store.
Did I say that is a great lathe? It is.
Variable speed, reverse, speed indicator, 16" swing, all good stuff.
An uneven floor, and a lathe that has not been tweaked for same, will have the head stock and live center not match up. Even though it is cast iron, it does flex. If you can get the points to line up by tweaking the feet, normal situation-buy it if the price is right. Move fast if you see one, they don't come up for sale that often.

Thanks for the input, I have been looking for a while and as you said they don't come up often. I am going to look at a 1-1/2 hp 1642 that is supposed to be 2 years old and only used 4 times about an hour each time. Suppose to have some accessories with it as well. Hope it is as good as it sounds. Will let you know what I find.

2 grand. But it sounds like there will be a lot of accessories with it mostly new in box stuff.

If it is line new, accessories, no tax, ..... sounds like a good deal.
Buying the lathe is just the beginning of the vortex. So, if it comes with a gouge or two, maybe a chuck....

Mike - I have the 2 hp 1642 and know what the lathe can do! You are going to be extremely happy with your purchase! I am still in shock at all the other extras you got along with the lathe! WOW!

Looking forward to seeing some turnings from you real soon!

Ron, I just about got everything he had. I guess he is getting out of woodworking. I was suprised as well because he didn't mention half of the things I got. I guess it was being at the right place at the right time.

Steve, thanks. I know you guys say it isn't so without pictures. So I am trying to upload some right now and see if it works.

Might be a little while before I can make something, I have a lot to absorb.

Last one. Ran this blank for 30 minutes at 550 rpm and no noise or heat. Tail stock and headstock line up perfectly.

You did great Mike. Was skeptical of the price until you showed all those "accessories". Wow! The 4/4 lumber will be good for segmenting and stave work when you get to that point. You're gonna love that lathe.
