Wood Sources on Long Island, NY

I’m relatively new to this board.
I live in Hicksville, NY which is part of Nassau County on Long Island.

At the beginning of September I got a JET JWL-1220VS Lathe.

I’ve been able to get 2x2’s of poplar, pine, and fir at Loews.

I searched the internet and found several sites which sell turning blanks of domestic wood (Woodturners Catalog, Rockler, Got Wood, etc.) I ordered some blanks of Ash, Maple, Oak, and Walnut at reasonable prices.

However, I’d like to find a source near me where I can pick and choose on site.

Do any fellow Longislanders know of such a source?

can't help you out with sources like that but I'd suggest joining a local turning guild, they can probably help you out a lot.

If you buy all your wood your gonna spend ALOT of money.

I would suggest making friends with a few tree trimmers.

None of the big box stores are going to supply your wood for turning

fire wood and tree trimmers are a good source of free wood

but you need to find hardwood lumber in the city there should be plenty of suppliers but close to you is

Joe I may be able to help you out. I am a cabinet maker in suffolk county.

I have a lot of different species of wood (KD) cherry, Walnut, Ash, White Oak, White Maple, Teak, Lace wood, Mahogany, Sapelle and the list goes on. I also have a ton of green wood Walnut, Cherry and Ash.

Probably over 7 hours (each way), without traffic!

I think you have already seen some of the best advise:
- Visit your local turning group
- Find some local tree trimmers
- Tree in backyard (well, only if it needs to be taken down)

One thing about wood turning - once people learn you are interested in wood, you will be amazed at how the randoms offers begin to show up. Plan to have a good place to store the wood as you begin to accumulate it.

The best wood is FREE wood and I've found most of it ends up at the dump. Most operators process it pretty quick but if you're lucky, you may have yourself some beautiful turning stock. A chainsaw is required! Good luck!

Condon Lumber. I believe they have a place in White Plains and a place up by our shop in Stormville, NY. Never been, but hear that it's out of this world.

I know it's a bit of a hike for you but could be well worth it.

The closest wood supplier to you would be Wood Ply, in Freeport, NY. Very nice selection of exotic woods and reasonable prices.

If I ever learn to REALLY turn I may invest in nicer woods also.
You don't look to be very far from the Newark or Kearny area of NJ. I'm a little surprised there is not someone around those areas. Speciality cabinet shops to get cut-offs from?

That's a shame. They were a little out of the way for me, but buying hardwoods on Long Island has become a difficult job.
Roberts Plywood has a very good selection of hardwoods. They are in Deer Park. Almost nothing longer than 12'. That's a problem when building stairs.
J&A lumber in Ronkonkoma used to be very good, but the economy has really cut into their inventory.
Most of my lumber gets shipped in from Pa. or the Bronx.
