Thread: Kind of woodworking.

    Kind of woodworking.

A couple weeks ago I posted a pic of one of four chairs I got in to cane which have medallions in the caned panel. Of course I have gotten out of the caning business, but I got talked into this job because they couldn't find anyone else who could do it. Not that there aren't other caners, the owners just couldn't find anyone.

The first pic is of one of the chairs as I received it. The second is a pic of the same chair newly caned. The caning would have looked better if it had binding around the edges, but the owners wanted them the way they were. The third pic is of the set of chairs sitting in my former shop. (sob)

    Thanks for looking.

Wow, Don, that is fabulous work. I'm so sorry that you had to leave the business...were you able to pass on your knowledge to anyone??

Gee Chris, I wish you would quit reading my mind (and getting a jump on the posting). That is the first thing that came to mind after admiring your beautiful work Don, I really hope you have been able to pass on to someone the art form you are obviously a master of.

    Don-

That's "class" any way you cut it. I'd give anything to be close to your shop, and you'd find me quite the pest. Beautiful work. Are those chairs as old as I take them to be? Someone, somewhere, sometime, did quite a job on the wood, also.

That is great work. I live in a town that has an event celebrating its history and abundance of restored old houses and part of the event is sometimes we arrange demonstrations by craftsmen and women who demonstrate caning, quilting etc. That may be an avenue for you to share your gift. If you are interested, you might even find people who are interested in taking classes from you.

    Don,
I've done a little of the standard, utilitarian caning in both plastic and natural rush/reed but these are absolutely awesome.
How on earth do you get that pattern?
Sure wished I lived within driving distance. I need lessons.
    Again, WOW !!!!!!!!!!!

I have done so much with so little for so long I am now qualified to do anything with nothing......

P.S. If you are interested in plans for any project that I post, just put some money in an envelope and mail it to me and I will keep it.

Demonstrating at festivals, museums, etc. is one of the things I did. I always enjoyed it. I also play the saw and the two together brought me far more invitations to demonstrate than I could handle. Thanks for the interets.
