    End table design

I'm considering making 2 end tables like the one in the picture. I would like to use some walnut & hard maple I have on hand, making the stretchers & top out of walnut & the remainder of the table out of maple. I'm wondering if having the top darker than the lower portions would make them look "top heavy". I'm thinking not, and that it would be more appealing aesthetically than the other way around (tops light in color remainder dark). Tops are ~27 x 14. These will go on either side of a tan colored couch, in front of which will be a walnut coffee table I've just completed. Any opinions?

    TIA

Personally, I like the Walnut/Maple combination. I don't think it will look bad at all. If you DO feel the need to "balance" it out, you could do something with the legs, similar to what I did on these. That would give you a little more "balance"

I really like the design and wondering where you found it. Are their plans?

Thanks Dan. After looking at the picture you have, I would consider making that "extra" piece just below the apron out of Maple, to match the top. But I like contrasting woods.

It sounds like a job for photoshop. I'll ask my daughter if she can change the colors.

    Dan,

From what I see in the photo, the top and narrow piece below the apron are matching, lighter colored wood than the legs and main apron parts. I think that's the direction the contrast should go; i.e., walnut legs and apron with maple top and accent pieces.
