There is an item on ebay, as a L-N plane. Only one pic and no info. Odd looking plane. I was curious if anyone knows what it is?

Yup its a butt mortise plane.Used for cutting hinge gains.Stanley made it too
Like nothing I've ever seen. Even if you assume someone replaced the tote with a knob, it still doesn't look like anything. Maybe an old discontinued model? If you're interested, and no one else chimes in, I'd ask the seller exactly what it is and why does he think it's a LN.
Well, that was quick! LOL. How come I don't own one of these??
geezzz... how many times have I thumbed through the LN catalog, and never seen that one! Too funny.

Thanks for the quick responses and setting me straight.

I own one and it works great!!!! Merry Christmas.
That was the one plane Stanley never made. There were two major makers but I don't remember who they were. If I find it, I'll post it.

I found a posting from someone who seems to know the planes.
The patent was issued to Wilbert A. Dohmeyer (2,579,911 - 1951). There were a couple of known makers, R. M. Rumbold and T. S. Wheeler, both Chicago area makers.

Go into the world and do well. But more importantly, go into the world and do good.
I just purchased one of these from Lie-Nielsen. It does indeed work great for making hinge mortises.
I carry one in the truck, very useful, it's paid for itself many times over.
I bought one when I upgraded the doors in my house. I recommend it.
As a Christmas gift, I'm giving someone a used Mac along with the monitor you see below. When I got the monitor out of the box and went to set it up, the third leg on it snapped off. So I fabricated a new leg to work similar to those picture frames that can stand on their own.
Part of the design uses a hinge, so here was a good excuse to put the Lie-Nielsen Butt Mortise Plane to good use.
