Period Highboy Plans and Lumber Estimator

I'm fairly new to this site and couldn't find an answer when I searched, hope I'm not asking old questions! Can anyone direct me to period highboy plans other than NYWS. I'd like to make one for my wife's 50th but would really like to check out some good drawings. Secondly some plans I have seen, cut sheets or a material list available. Does anyone know any computer programs I can use to put all of the parts lists in, and get a list of the rough lumber requirements minimized for waste? I've heard of programs for CNC and cabinet shops, is there one for the average person? Thanks

    Tom,
you dont list where you are, but you should contact the Society of American Period Furniture Makers for help. Try going to SAPFM dot org
Be aware that parts lists and cut sheets are not likely to be found as most are more concerned about grain patterns than in conserving wood. Also, plans are likely to be quite expensive - in the $300 range.
It might be less expensive (and more fun) to take a class in which you build the highboy. There are several around, Lonnie Bird and Jeff Headley are two that come to mind, there are others.
    Best,

    Thomas,

There are lots of sources out there, can you give more detail of the type of high chest you would like to build?

There are a couple of really nice plans in "Queen Anne Furniture" by Norman Vandal, for starters. You can also look at the exploded drawing in the back section of Jeffrey Greene's "American Furniture of the 18th Century."

just search for highboy, a couple of examples here.

This one is really good and very detailed. Plan on spending a good deal of time however building one of these unless you're bionic of very talented!! Glen Huey does a good job of explaining the process and it even comes with a DVD, a complete parts and materials lists and lots of detailed pictures.

If at first you don't succeed, look in the trash for the instructions.

Thanks for the heads up on lmc designs

The note about lmc designs was appreciated. Making a highboy is on my list of future projects and I have Glen Huey's books and others which are helpful.

While I have gobs of magazines and don't have access to period pieces in museums, it really helps to have access to some other plans too. The suggestion about plans through SAPFM is also a good one.

I found at least one set of plans on lmc that appealed to me.

    Take care,
    Jim

    Thomas,

This is a good example of the form, and Lynch's drawings and measurements are generally excellent.

This is an advanced project, though.

Addition: Seems Garrett Wade is having a sale on plans and drawings:

Thanks to all who replied. My next issue is to have the "Boss" pic the one she likes!
