    Newport Block Front Chest

Hey guys, here is another one I just finished. This started out when I got a 5 ½” thick slab of curly Honduran mahogany. I actually resawed the one board to make all the drawer fronts. The drawers start out at a slab right at 2 ½” thick and the board was wide enough to get two drawers per slice so it worked out perfect. The whole piece is figured Honduran mahogany. For the top I resawed an 8/4 piece of fiddle back mahogany and book matched it. The sides are also book matched although not as figured. The secondary wood for the piece is poplar. The finish is aniline dye, BLO, shellac and lacquer. The color was not my choice and is a little to red for my tast but the customer loves it.

Any idea how much time you have in the carvings?

Nice work, beautiful chest. I love the Newport block and shell furniture, I would like to build a kneehole desk one of these days. And there is much of this Newport furniture in museums that is every bit as red as yours, so I think your customer made a good choice. I really enjoy the period you work in and have admired many of your pieces.

Did you have a particular piece in mind for your reproduction, were you working of a plan or photograph? I am interested in how you came up with your dimensions, proportions, etc. Your blocking and shells are compact and gives the piece a vertical "springy" feel and looks great.

    Thanks for posting, Cal.

    I'm with you Paul.

I could sit looking at this piece of furniture all day long. Outstanding!

Outstanding piece Dave... and yep... wrong section of the forum. Im surprised a moderator hasn't moved it. I almost missed the piece as I go over the WW Projects daily and occassionally scan this section which I did today.

Again.. outstanding and kudo's for the many hours of detail that has to be spent on a carcasss piece as this!
