I got a warning about an invalid certificate when I clicked it. No one there either. I guess we'll have to wait for success or a moderator to tell us if it works.
It wasn't an invalid certificate--
Windows XP SP 2 has stepped up security features, so the warning you saw is just a "Run" or "Don't Run" dialog (Publisher Unknown). Click "Run" to download the Java chat applet--it's perfectly safe.

Or just use mIRC or one of the other chat programs.
This box has ME (Yeah, I know, but it doesn't lock up) on it, but I'll take your word on the certificate. Kids use Bill Gates' chat and AOL, will that work?
The chat client must be IRC-compatible, which excludes AOl, MSN, Yahoo, etc.
A few IRC compatible clients are mIRC, Trillian, IceChat.

I have tried mIRC and Trillian and stuck with mIRC. A little easier to setup and use.
