    1st lidded box

Kendal Yates picked us up some maple blanks, from a bat maker in Va. So I decided to try my hand at turning a box. I have a lot of blanks, so I'll be be trying to find things to make with them.

Very nice LB. It is hard to believe that is your first one. Looks like you got the hang of it.

Raffan would be proud!! That sure is some nice, straight grained maple in those blanks. I bet all of them are like that - should be very stable.

That is a cutie pie. Simple but elegant. Did you drill the hollow, or turn it out?

Joe, who is and where is this batmaker in VA? I'm probably just down the road a couple of hours.

I hollowed it with a bowl gouge, and a termite. I don't like the square edges that drilling would leave. As to the bat maker, Kendal has that info. Perhaps he could post a #. The man makes custom bats, and has a lot of 11" to 14" cutoffs tha he posted on craigs list. He uses them for fire wood!! Kendal picked me up 115 of them and got himself 50 for .60 a piece. He has a lot of them.

Neat looking box. Thought it was quite plain at first but after coming back to look at it 3 or 4 more times it must be growing on me!

I have turned bowls, and pens, and wine stoppers. But, doing endgrain turning in such a tight space. And fitting a lid intimidated me. I wanted to be able to hollow the box properly, not with a drill. Thanks, everyone for the comments. And, yesthe design is Raffans.
