    Spalted Pecan

This is a bowl I did a few months ago. A freind is doing some sawmill work in conjunction with the NC DENR and the NC Museum of History, this was the trim from the butt end of the log, it was punky and badly checked, but I think I made it work. The checking was so bad that there where actually open cracks, all filled with charcoal and CA. Finished it just looks like the spalting...only straight. It was donated to the museum and will be displayed in their conference room.

16"x4"(thicker than I would have liked, but the checking wouldn't allow thinner) BLO and Poly.

Wow, Gary. That is simply spaltacular!

    Nice pattern!

Can you explain your finishing schedule? I'm curious about when in the process you introduced the CA and charcoal.

    Really wonderful!

    Gary,

Good looking turning and a nicely spalted piece of wood. I have not been lucky enough to find anyone needing a pecan cut down around here yet but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Very pretty wood. I like the form, especially the way the base lifts the main part of the bowl.

Beautifully done Gary. Very nice shape and form and the wood itself is just spectacular.

    Nice work.

If you hadn't mentioned filling the splits, I wouldn't have notice that the spalting in places was in straight lines.

The bowl was turned, then the cracks filled with CA and charcoal, sand and finish.
