    Disaster and remedy

I have been experimenting with curved joints in laminating rather than straight joints. After three weeks work I had completed the top of a new laminated bowl, ready for the lathe. Mounted securely and started to turn the edge true when there was a simple "crack" and the job dissentigrated in a flash.
    (photo 1)
I found six of the eight segments and gave up in disgust. Three weeks latter the missing two pieces came to light and the bowl was repaired and completed. I am reasonably happy with the result. The bowl or hollow form is 310mm diameter and 120mm high.

    Nice save!

Jim, It looked pretty bad in the first picture! But you must have had the patience of a saint to get in back together and finished! Nice looking piece, I hope to gain the patience to do a segmented piece before I die!

Wow - what a beautiful design! Glad you were able to save the piece - well worth the effort!

Any chance you can include a photo showing the profile?

Very nice work Jim! Very nice!

That shows the promise of what segmented work can be. You have reason to be more than just 'reasonably happy with the outcome'.

Wow! What a recovered effort! Great looking piece not even considering the original disaster, but given the pile of parts you ended up with initially, you worked wonders with this.

Beautiful design work, and overall just a really nice piece!

Great save Jim! and a beautiful piece as well. Are the curved parts done with a router and jig?

Okay, I'm really sure that my small disaster will not come out looking like this. Great save. I think you should be quite proud of the result. It's a beauty.

That's a beautiful design. Normally I'm not a big fan of segmented work but this is "above the fold". An impressive save too. That's the sign of a true craftsman... not to never have a disaster but to be able to recover from one. You did this very deftly.

The disaster makes this bowl all the more beautiful. This is one splendid segmented vessel.
