    New Shop Construction Finally Underway

I have been designing a new wood shop since I bought my house in 2004. Here is the plan drawn in Sketchup.

We got started on the groundwork for the new shop in late summer 2009. The pipes sticking out of the ground are the sewer and the water line from the house.

We hauled in fill to bring up the ground level to the level of the garage.

In the summer of 2010 construction started in earnest. I have dug out and formed up the footings.

My brothers and I poured the footing and are laying the foundation blocks. We opened the East wall of the garage where the door into the shop will go. I am going to put in a pair of 36" doors to access the shop.

The foundation walls are complete. I am in the process of installing rebar in the foundation walls and core filling the blocks.

I have filled in the shop area. We installed 2" stryofoam on the foundation walls.

We installed 2" styrofoam under the floor and roughed in the electrical in the floor. I also ran a dust collection drop for the tablesaw under the concrete. We installed 750 feet of PEX tubing for the radiant floor heat. I placed rebar on 32" spacing.

Kim Crow is my brother. He is the one running the power trowel for me on the floor.

We started the pour at about 1pm and had the concrete layed by 2. It wasn't till about 8 that the concrete had cured enough that we were done troweling. The last picture is after we applied the sealer on the concrete that night.

The shop is 28x28 on the outside, 27x27 1/2 on the inside. 2x6 walls. I am going 8'8" ceiling to match the current garage.

This weekend I am going to build the trusts and next weekend we are standing up the walls and putting on the roof. Probably will not get shingles on it the first weekend, but will get the felt on it.

I am lucky enough that I live where there are no building regulations, so I can use rough cut lumber from my sawmill.

It doesn't look like you'll have any space left over once you put your tablesaw there into your new shop. Awesome capacity though.

For a second I thought you said Kim was your 'little' brother, then I had to go look at the picture again and realize you did not say little

Very nice. I look forward to some more pictures. Shop envy!
