    Cherry Dining Set Complete

I have posted a number of progress shots, and am happy to have completed this project. The wood for the table came from Hearn Hardwoods in PA. The finish is wipe on poly, with wax buffed. The table joints are traditional M&T. The wood was truly a delight to work with. The top is about 1-1/8 thick, with the edges tapered to about 3/4" to give a lighter look.

    As always, feedback is welcome.

    Thanks

Excellent work Hans, the set is simply beautiful. I am sure this set will be an heirloom in your home for many years to come..

I like the flow of the lines in the dining chairs and the tapered legs to compliment the tables, a beautiful piece of work.

How did you go about sanding prior to finishing, I ask as Cherry can surface check during sanding (due to heat build up from friction while sanding) and I see no signs of this in your work.
My method is to hand finish, scrape and light sanding rather than trust a power tool when possible with Cherry, can be tedious but safe.

    Thanks Rob,

My sequence for this table was:
Hand plane and belt sand (fairly rough grit to get the thing flat without checks), then card scrapers for the whole surface so there is no sign of the sanding, then a VERY light sanding with 220 grit, then apply finish. The finish was 5 coats of Minwax wipe-on poly, with the last couple of coats being fairly generous to avoid streaking. Steel wool with 0000 between coats, then apply wax with 0000 steel wool, then another coat applied with just cloth, then buffed.

    Cheers
    Hans

    Hans,

You did this wood justice. It is absolutely beautiful!

Are the chairs of your own design? I love the back design on those.

    A fine effort

I really like the design, is it your's? The table top is magnificent! Do you have an estimate of you time involved?

    Thank you, Bret
