    Great job Sean.
Nice touch on the rim treatment. It sure adds a lot to the piece.

Nice one Sean. Everything about it is "spot on". Makes me want to turn a bowl!

Inside pic attached. I didn't think to take one of the bottom, in part because I hadn't signed it yet.

Norm, it's finished with simple BLO and beeswax.

    Thanks again, everyone!

The rim really draws my attention! The rolled oval shape works so well with the deep beads. It is quite pleasing, and aesthetic. Great shape on the rest of the bowl. Not always easy on oak.

    Sean,

That is a super-nice bowl. A large, well turned, well designed and well executed work! I love the grain on this and appreciate you taking the time to get the inside shot as well!

    One well worth showing!

The knocks on red oak I've heard are that it is unsuitable for use in utility bowls as the grain structure will let liquids seep through. Another is that is is hard to turn when dry. And finally, it is often thought of as a having a plain looking grain with very open pores which some don't like.

I'll tell the recipient that this bowl is just for dry items. Oak isn't the nicest wood to turn, but I find it much easier to turn than say, dry hickory or pecan.

Very nice bowl and rim treatment but I think the lighting in your first picture impresses me as much as anything! Really brings out all the best qualities of your work. Just curious. Did you only use natural light? Time of day etc.? Your 2nd picture of the bowl doesn't come close to making the same impact. What was differerent? Thanks!

    Thanks, Baxter.

Just day light. About 2 pm. THe main differnce is my angle in relation to the sun. In the first pic, the sun is coming from the right. In the second, in order to eliminate shadows, it is behind me. With the direct rays on the subject, it's much harder to avoid a too bright look.
