Help with Delta Shaper Model 43-361

I picked up a Delta Shaper Model 43-361 a while back. Its been sitting in my barn for a while until I could make space in my shop. I have not used a shaper since High School woodshop so I don't know much about them. I thought the user manual would be a good place to start but I can't find one. In fact, I can't even find a reference to this model number. About all I find with a Google search are other shapers for sale. Delta/DeWalt doesn't have it in their online manual source. Does anyone know where I might find a manual, or if this model is similar to another model? I know sometimes Delta and Rockwell have different numbers for the same model tool.

    Thanks, Mike

From pictures on the internet, it sounds like a standard Delta HD shaper, maybe 1980's. Delta used a gazillion model numbers, based on variations like spindle size and motor size. You can get manuals from OWWM.com here: http://owwm.com/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=1141&tab=3&sort=2&th=false&fl==

The manual will tell you about the machine, but not much on how to use it. I suggest searching for shaper books. There are several out there. You can check shaper threads here on SMC for the names and maybe some recommendations.

You can also check mike's tools if you have the serial number.

Delta made the same basic shaper for decades, so grab the manual from any machine of similar configuration as far as spindle size and hp and that will show you the basics mechanically for maintenance. Delta manuals all include a basic primer on safe shaper use, as do powermatics, so pull any shaper manual from those makers for some info.

Delta also published a book "How to run a shaper" that is probably available on the web if you poke around. I know I downloaded a copy but I can't remember where. I'm sure it's been out of copyright for a long time but it's a good resource.

Mike, in my opinion, this is the best of the shaper guides I've found.

    http://www.skillspublish.com.au/BK08-19.htm

It's the Spindle Moulder Handbook and covers modern safety standards and uses for the machine, unlike the other two books I own which are very dated in that respect.

    Regards, Rod.

Richard at the OWWM site knows everything there is to know about these machines. He sells spindles, bearings, etc. He rebuilt one of my bearing cartridges. Very good work for a reasonable price:
