Thread: Recognize this logo?

    Recognize this logo?

I recently picked up some chisels that have only this logo fro identification. I've tried Google, Bing and searching the forum, but I can't find it. If anyone can tell me what brand these are and whether they're worth using, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!!

It may be better to sharpen one up and see how it holds an edge to determine the usefulness instead of depending on the branding.

I have a Swan that looks good, but doesn't seem to hold an edge. I have some no name chisels that seem to have very fantastic steel for taking and holding an edge.

I've never seen that one. You might look here: http://home.comcast.net/~alloy-artifacts/mfg-index.html

    Looks like a P & something else.

I had a #5 plane once with a tapered cutter that had the same logo... nice laminated cutter. Seemed quality, perhaps the chisels are too. I thought it was Rockford Tool Co. but that was just my best guess.

John, thanks very much for that link. That's great!!

James, I'm pretty sure its a quality tool given that the other chisels are Witherby's, Buck Bros and W. Butcher. I'm just curious and its becoming something of an obsession to find out who made these.

Threads on the Old Tools List archive suggest it's the logo for Riverside Tool Co. (See here and here)

I also believe that an Anvil with R and T inside is Riverside Tool. In fact, I think it say R T CO in there....I think the CO is the central eyeball looking thing.

    Hi Dave,

There was a thread here a few weeks back with a Riverside Tool Co, saw,

They were a New York City Hardware dealer in the early 1900's and branded a lot of tools. Like this expanding bit. Saws, and so on...
