My BIL found some rough Pecan that he may be able to pick up. Having not used it I need your advice. Is it worth getting and what would be the best use? What type of wood is it to work with?

Part of the Hickory family. Used interchangably. Hard as hail. It is worth getting. I like it for making mallets and tool handles.
What about a good workbench? Could it work for that?
absolutely. It will be heavy though.
I'd think it would work great for a bench, and look stunning in the process. Jim.

Pecans are tasty...don't know about the wood, though
Sorry, couldn't help it. It's Thanksgiving and food is on the brain!

A woman's work is never done-but power tools help!
Built my kitchen cabinets out of it. It can be very tough on jointer and planer knives.

It can be a beautiful wood. I used a strip of it on the counter edge of some kitchen cabinets I built. Two reasons: (1) It is very hard and dent-resistant.
(2) It was the only board I had that was long enough to cover the length with no joint.
Pecan is a great cabinet wood for a rustic look. It has a warm reddish-tan color. Lots of imperfections (worm holes, knots and streaks) give "pecky pecan" it's name. Leave pecan natural with a clear finish; don't dare stain it!
Some ornamental yard trees might yield longer boards, but most pecan lumber comes from old orchard trees with very short trunks. Four to six-foot-long boards are plenty for cabinet work though!

It is beautiful stuff. I used q-sawn pecan to wainscott my mudroom with v-groove. It is stunning as paneling.
